SWIFT S-CONCEPT

On the heels of a report that Suzuki has begun development of a new-generation 2012 Swift Sport, comes the Japanese carmaker's Swift S-Concept at Geneva this week.

Suzuki describes the S-Concept as a design study, and has offered little in the way of technical details. It has confirmed however that the power for the concept is provided by a 1.6 litre four-cylinder engine, mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

Output for the engine was not revealed, although it is likely a version of the 92kW four-cylinder M16A engine used in the current Swift Sport.

In Japan, the regular 2011 Swift is powered by a choice of 1.2 petrol and 1.3 litre diesel engines, producing 70kW and 52kW respectively. The Australian-delivered Swift draws power from a new 1.4 litre engine, delivering 70kW and 130Nm of torque.

While few technical details are known, it's the S-Concept's styling that Suzuki has focused on at Geneva, adding new sports-focused bumpers and side skirts, along with large 18-inch wheels and a high-mounted rear spoiler.

The theme continus inside with a more performance-styled steering wheel, Recaro sports seats and a contrasting black and yellow trim with yellow stitching.

How much of the S-Concept's look will carry over to the new Swift Sport remains to be seen, but it appears the brand is on the right track.
