With the 9-5 SportCombi wagon making its online debut late last week, the crown jewel in Saab's Geneva Motor Show stand has now been revealed: the 2011 Saab Phoenix Concept.

Built on the same platform that the next-generation 9-3 will ride on, the Phoenix concept introduces what Saab's design boss Jason Castriota refers to as 'aeromotional' styling, a reference to the company's history as an aircraft manufacturer.

"The PhoeniX establishes a new reference point for the future of Saab product design," Castriota says. "It symbolizes a renaissance of the innovative spirit and passion that drove Saab to build its first car."

"We're now taking the visual DNA forward with what we call 'aeromotional' design, adding emotion, power and fluidity. This design aesthetic will shape and differentiate future models in the Saab portfolio."

Castriota adds that the Phoenix embraces a teardrop 'liquid metal' form, tied to a dramatic jet canopy-inspired glasshouse that continues the wraparound window styling of the new 9-5 Sedan.

Interior images have not been revealed, but Saab promises a 2+2 seating layout, with a minimalist 'stripped out' feel to the trim and controls.

Power is provided by an 25kW electrically-driven rear axle, mated to a 147kW 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol engine driving the front wheels - a combination that results in all-wheel-drive capability.

Performance figures have not been revealed, although Saab says the hybrid arrangement allows for fuel consumption figures of just 5.0 l/100km.

Saab says that while the styling of the Phoenix is purely a concept study, elements of its design will work their way into Saab's new models in the coming years - starting, no doubt, with the next-generation 9-3.
