Renowned studio Italdesign Giugiaro has thrown back the curtain on its first project since joining the Volkswagen family late last year, and fittingly, it's a pair of Volkswagen concepts.

One a small people-mover and the other a sporty-looking three-door, the concepts are named Go! and Tex, respectively. Both concepts utilise electric motors - a constant theme for Volkswagen's most recent concepts, and part of its push toward launching an all-electric 'E-Motion' range in the coming years.

The Tex draws power from a Twin Drive plug-in hybrid system, combining a 1.4 litre turbocharged engine with an 85kW electric motor. Together with a seven-speed Direct Shift transmission, the Tex packs 400Nm of torque, hitting 100km/h in "about" six seconds.

On electric power alone, the Tex has a driving range of around 35km.

With its hatch styling, it's no great leap to imagine the Tex as an ninth- or tenth-generation member of the future Golf family.

Little has been revealed about the all-electric powerplant of the Go!, although Volkswagen says its Blue E-Motion well get up to 240km out of its front-and-rear split battery packs, bettering the driving range of most passenger EVs.

"Go! is an MPV that continues that subject owing to its improved ergonomics and passenger room while keeping the smaller exterior size that has distinguished a large part of my career," ItalDesign boss Giorgetto Giugiaro said.

Measuring 3990mm long, the Go! is described as a roomy MPV, built on the same 2700mm wheelbase as the European- and Australian-market Passat.

Both concepts are based on Volkswagen's flexible MQB platform (Modularer Over-Baukasten, or modular transverse architecture), which will underpin many of Volkswagen's vehicles in the future.

Volkswagen says that while the Go! and Tex were developed to propose "solutions for the urban mobility of tomorrow," neither concept is likely to make it to market before 2018.
