Reports from 2009 of an electric vehicle project at Rolls-Royce are at last confirmed, with news this week that Rolls Royce will show an electrified Phantom at next month's Geneva Motor Show.

Dubbed 102EX Phantom Experimental Electric, Rolls-Royce says the car is, for now at least, purely a concept designed to measure customer interest in the idea of an electricity-sipping Rolls.

"We have engineered the world's first battery electric vehicle for the ultra-luxury segment," CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös said, speaking from the company's headquarters in Goodwood.

"With this vehicle, we begin an exploration into alternative drive-trains, seeking clarity on which alternative technologies may be suitable to drive Rolls-Royce motor cars of the future."

Müller-Ötvös' comments follow an interview with retired CEO Tom Purves, describing electricity as one potential means of offering the 'instant and strong torque' that all Rolls cars should offer.

Technical details for the concept have not been revealed, but Rolls-Royce says it will act as a working test bed for a tour of Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America, giving owners the opportunity to offer their feedback on the company's plans for the future.

"I must be convinced that any alternative drive-train we choose for the future delivers an authentic Rolls-Royce experience," Müller-Ötvös added. "It must be a technology that is right for our customers, our brand and which sets us on a sound footing for a sustainable future."
