Chrysler Australia has launched its all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee into the Australian market, following an international launch late last year.

The new Grand Cherokee represents the first new model launch under new CEO, Sergio Marchionne, and the first of a number of new Chrysler Group models destined for Australia in the next two years.

Here, the new Grand Cherokee will kick off with the entry-level V6-powered Laredo, priced from $45,000, followed by V6 and V8 versions of the Limited and the range-topping $69,500 V8-powered Overland.

Inside, the 2011 Grand Cherokee benefits from a more up-market feel and style than its predecessor, with soft-touch materials and contrast stitching carried throughout the cabin, including the sash, consoles and armrests.

Rear storage is 11 percent greater than the outgoing model, allowing for 782 litres of luggage space. The rear seats offer a 60/40 split fold design, increasing rear storage even further.

Access to the interior is also improved, with the front door opening increased by 48mm in width and 51mm in height, while the rear doors now open to 78 degrees - up from 67 degrees.

Standard on Overland models and an option for Limited models, the new Grand Cherokee features Jeep's new CommandView dual-pane sun roof, offering double the glass surface of a standard sunroof.

Reaching from the windscreen to the rear of the vehicle, the sun roof slides at the front and is fixed at the rear. A powered sun shade is standard when the CommandView sun roof is fitted.

The front seats offer eight-way power adjustment, including four-way power lumbar support and manual four-way head restraints. The rear seats recline a total of 12 degrees, with three lockable positions.

Key features, depending on grade and options, include heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, ParkSense and ParkView parking assist, keyless Enter-N-Go system, Bi-Xenon HID automatic headlights, daytime running lights, blindspot monitoring and cross-path detection systems.

Other features include forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, a premium Alpine audio system, powered liftgate, and powered tilt/reach steering column.

Among its 45-plus safety features, the new Grand Cherokee includes ABS braking with Road-road Detection, Brake Assist, Brake Override, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Electronic Roll Mitigation, Hill-start Assist, Trailer-sway Control and Hill-descent Control.

The Grand Cherokee's standard airbag complement includes full-length side-curtain airbags, along with standard front and seat-mounted side-thorax airbags. Front-row active head restrains are also featured.

The new Grand Cherokee has yet to be crash-safety tested by Australia's ANCAP, although it was awarded last year with a 'Top Safety Pick' score by the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Two powertrains are offered with the new Grand Cherokee, including the Chrysler Group's brand-new 3.6 litre Pentastar V6 and the company's improved 5.7 litre HEMI V8.

The 3.6 litre engine is standard with the Laredo, and one of two options for the Limited spec. Power is rated at 210kW and 347Nm of torque, with fuel consumption listed at 11.4 l/100km on the combined cycle.

Equipped with VVT and a four-cylinder mode for cruising, the revised 5.7 litre HEMI V8, available with the Limited and standard with the Overland, produces 259kW and 520Nm of torque. Fuel cosumption is listed 14.1 l/100km.

All variants are available with a five-speed automatic transmission only.

The V6 engine will launch the Grand Cherokee to 100km/h in 9.1 seconds, while the heavier V8 models are marginally quicker at 8.7 seconds.

The Pentastar V6 offers a towing capability of 2268kg, while the V8 will pull up to 3500kg.

Quadra-Lift air suspension

The new Grand Cherokee is also offered with the optional Quadra-Lift air suspension system (standard with Overland), providing a total of 104mm of lift adjustment - operated automatically or manually via console controls.

Quadra-Lift is supported by four-corner air springs featuring five height settings for optimum ride performance:

  • Normal Ride Height (NRH): 205mm of clearance offers improved fuel consumption and improved aerodynamics during on-road driving
  • Off Road 1: Lifts the vehicle an additional 33mm to 238mm for added height in clearing obstacles
  • Off Road 2: Delivers off-road capability and provides an additional 66mm over NRH for 271mm of ground clearance
  • Park Mode: Lowers the vehicle 38mm from NRH for easy ingress/egress and roof rack loading.
NRH and Park mode are driver-selectable, giving the driver control over vehicle ride height
  • Aero Mode: Lowers the vehicle 13mm from NRH. Aero Mode is controlled by vehicle speed and adjusts for optimal performance and fuel consumption

With the front air dam removed and the available Quadra-Lift air suspension set to Off Road 2 mode, the Grand Cherokee features a 34.3-degree approach angle, a 27.3-degree (to rear recovery tow hook) departure angle and a 23.1-degree breakover angle.

4WD Systems: Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II

Two 4WD systems are offered with the new Grand Cherokee in Australia, the Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II systems.

Quadra-Trac II (standard with Laredo and Limited) uses a tow-speed transfer case, taking sensor input to determine tyre slip and take corrective action, sending up to 100 percent of torque to the axle with the most traction.

Quadra-Drive II (standard with Overland), with a rear Electronic Limited-Slip Differential detects tyre slip and distributes engine torque to the wheels with the most traction.

Selec-Terrain

The Selec-Terrain traction control system is also featured on all models, letting drivers choose their preferred setting for all types of terrain.

The Selec-Terrain control dial allows the driver to choose from five driving conditions in order to achieve the best driving experience:

  • Snow: Vehicle traction adjusts for optimum performance over snow-covered roads
  • Sport: Provides enhanced on-road “fun-to-drive” capability
  • Auto: Automatically adapts to on- or off-road situations
  • Sand/Mud: Traction Control and Quadra-Lift operate with sensitive response to wheel spin and torque is tuned for optimal performance
  • Rock: Quadra-Lift suspension raises to a maximum height of 271mm and the transfer case, differentials and throttle coordinate to provide low-speed control

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available now.
