Reports last year of a supercharged six-cylinder Audi RS 4 gave hope to fans of the four rings for a new competitor to the latest generation of M3 and C 63 AMG sedans. In recent weeks, however, reports overseas have suggested that Audi had backed away from plans for an RS version of the current A4.

The off-and-on saga continues this week, with Dutch magazine Autovisie claiming to have confirmed with unnamed 'high-ranking' Audi insiders that development of a new RS4 is in fact well underway, with a debut expected in the new two years - four or five years into the life of the current A4.

The report adds that details obtained in the past week were from a source that had no actual involvement with the development of the new RS 4.

No longer available brand-new, the previous-generation RS 4 is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.2 litre V8 engine, producing around 310kW, hitting 100km/h in 4.8 seconds.

Reports last year claimed the new RS 4 would switch to the same V6 used by the S4, with power boosted well beyond its current 245kW.

Audi's vaunted RS badge is currently represented by the recently-launched RS 3, along with the RS 5, RS 6 and the TT RS.
