Toyota FT-86 Name Confirmed In Leaked Image?

A new image purporting to be the official 'logo' for Toyota's upcoming rear-wheel-drive sports car has appeared online this week, suggesting the Japanese carmaker may have settled on either '86' or the original concept's 'FT-86' name.

Published by US magazine Car & Driver, the image shows a cross-section of Subaru's 'boxer' engine layout (it's already known that power will be provided by a Subaru-developed engine), with a pattern in the centre that appears to be the numbers 8 and 6.

Earlier this year, it was rumoured that the new entry-level sports car would be named 'FR-S', after Toyota submitted a trademark application for the name in July. Interestingly, the logo image above could also be interpreted as a stylised take on the letters F, R and S.

Toyota has offered few updates on the progress of its new sports car, although a press event in Japan earlier this year reportedly saw Toyota's Shigeyuki Hori confirm a 2011 unveiling for the production version of the FT-86.
