2011 Volkswagen Caddy Launched In Australia

Mike Stevens | Dec 6, 2010

Unveiled in Europe earlier this year, Volkswagen Australia has today announced available for the updated-for-2011 Volkswagen Caddy.

Bringing Volkswagen's new family face to the current-generation Caddy, a number of styling and powertrain updates lead the way for the 2011 model.

Styling

Volkswagen's latest updates to the Caddy have brought the model in-line with the company's new family face.

The 2011 Caddy replaces the Golf 5-inspired fascia with the brand's sharp new headlight styling and letterbox grille, while the rear-end gets new crystal taillight lenses.

The rear number-plate recess (on the Caddy Maxi Life in vehicle body colour with a chrome strip) and the tailgate handle - now electrically operated as on the Multivan - have also been remodelled.

The Caddy’s external dimensions remain almost unchanged. With no roof rails the short-wheelbase van is 1.823m high (Caddy Life 1.822m), 4.406m long (both Caddy Van and Caddy Life) and (excluding mirrors) 1.794m wide.

The long-wheelbase van is 1.836m high (Caddy Maxi Life 1.861m), 4.876m long and 1.794m wide (for both Caddy Maxi Van and Caddy Maxi Life).

The Caddy Life is offered with 15-inch steel wheels, while the Caddy Maxi Life gets 16-inch alloy wheels, chrome trim features and painted bumpers.

Interior

The interior of the updated Caddy benefits from new trim fabrics, along with new instruments and a sports-styled three-spoke steering wheel.

In urban delivery van guise, the new Caddy is available as a two-seater 'panel van', featuring hard-wearing seats trimmed in a hard-wearing fabric and, on the outer edges, a smooth anthracite trim.

Moving up the range, the Caddy Life people-mover variants feature fabric seats with Volkswagen's 'Takato' trim and an anthracite finish to the outer sections and headrests.

The top trim grade and bodystyle in the Caddy line-up is the Caddy Maxi Life. Inside, this variant gets a leather steering wheel, leather gearshift knob and leather handbrake lever.

The Caddy's second-row seats are also equipped with height-adjustable headrests and three-point seat belts.

An optional third row of seating is also available with the Caddy Life, and is fitted as standard with the Caddy Maxi Life. the Caddy Maxi Life. It provides seating for two additional people, and the seatback can also be folded down.

The outer seat of the first row, which can always be individually folded forward, enables easier access to the third row.

Storage

While the Caddy Life is fitted with three seats in the second row as standard, folding these seats forward opens up a cargo capacity of 2020 litres, while the 470mm longer Caddy Maxi Life offers 3700 litres of cargo space with the second row seats still in place.

Removing the second row increases the Caddy Life's storage space to 3200 litres, and 3880 litres for the Caddy Maxi.

Equipment

The new Caddy is equipped with a variety of features depending on the specification.

The people-moving Caddy Life is equipped with daytime-running lights, remote central locking and a curb-side sliding door.

The Caddy Maxi Life gets roof rails, H7 headlights, tinted side and rear windows, height-adjustable central armrest up front, leather steering wheel, gearshift knob and handbrake lever.

The Caddy Maxi Life is also equipped with Volkswagen's RCD 310 radio/CD system with advanced audio and interface options. Other features include a multi-function display, cruise control, dusk-sensing headlights, rain-sensing wipers and auto-dimming rear view mirror.

Safety features, depending on specification, include ESP, front airbags and Isofix child-seat fittings on the outer seats of the second row.

Options

Also offered as an optional radio/navigation system is the RNS 510 model.

It includes a 6.5-inch touch screen, DVD player, voice control, an SD card slot and an extremely fast 30-gigabyte hard drive. In terms of radio/CD systems, the range includes the RCD 210, RCD 310 and RCD 510.

Mechanical

A new range of turbocharged, direct-injected petrol and diesel engines are available with the 2011 Caddy, bringing Volkswagen's range-wide downsizing programme to its popular goods-hauler and people-mover.

Petrol

The entry-level 1.2 litre TSI160 delivers 63kW and 160Nm of torque, with fuel consumption listed at 6.9 l/100km.

A more powerful version of the same engine, the 1.2 litre TSI175 produces 77kW and 175Nm of torque. Fuel consumption is listed at 7.0 l/100km - a 14.6 percent improvement over the equivalent outgoing engine.

Diesel

Volkswagen's 1.6 litre TDI250 engine produces 75kW and 250Nm of torque. With fuel consumption listed at 5.8 l/100km (5.9 for the Caddy Maxi Life), it is also the most fuel-efficient offering in the 2011 Caddy line-up.

The 2.0 litre TDI320 diesel engine produces 103kW and 320Nm of torque, making it the most powerful choice among the Caddy's engine options. Fuel consumption is listed at 6.3 l/100km for the Caddy Maxi Van and 6.5 l/100km for the Caddy Maxi Life.

Transmission

Depending on specification, the 2011 Caddy range is offered with three transmissions, including five- and six-speed manual transmissions, and six- and seven-speed versions of Volkswagen's DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission.
