Police in the Melbourne CBD nabbed 145 drink-drivers from 14,645 breath-tested motorists in a two-day blitz across Friday and Saturday, along with 91 speeding drivers.

Astoundingly, a Hoppers Crossing man was caught running a red light in an unregistered vehicle, with false number plates and a blood alcohol reading of 0.196.

As part of Operation Ring of Steel, Victoria Police also drug-tested 236 motorists (detecting 3 offenders), and caught 17 unlicensed/suspended drivers, 35 mobile phone offenders and 21 seat belt offenders.

North West Metro Road Policing Inspector Stephen Mutton said the operation was just the beginning of nation-wide Operation RAID (Remove All Impaired Drivers).

"This operation was essentially the launch of Operation RAID, which aims to remove motorist from the road who are impaired by alcohol or drugs," Mr Mutton said.

"Over the past two nights our members locked down the Melbourne CBD with booze bus and drink-driving sites covering all major exits to the outer suburbs."

Operation RAID, which runs from 26 November to 12 December, is designed to remove motorist from the road systems who are impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Police from Western Australia, Northern Territory, New South Wales, the ACT, South Australia, Queensland and Tasmania and Victoria are all taking part in the campaign.
