2011 AUDI A4 TDI E

Audi's fuel-sipping A4 TDI e has come in for a few more tweaks for the 2011 model year, shaving valuable fractions from its fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Launched in Australia earlier this year, the current diesel-powered A4 TDI e uses just 4.8 l/100km, emitting 124g/km of CO2. For 2011, the A4 TDI e has reduced consumption to 4.6 l/100km, while emissions are down to 120g/km.

Those figures come courtesy of Audi's 100kW/320Nm 2.0 litre TDI turbodiesel engine, new longer gear ratios and lower rolling-resistance tyres.

Aerodynamic tweaks to the body and a lower ride height improves the drag coefficient, while the on-board computer with efficiency program gives the driver tips about when to shift and on fuel-efficient driving.

The tweaks bring the A4 closer to one of Australia's most efficient cars, the smaller 2011 MINI Cooper D, its BMW-sourced 1.6 litre diesel engine using 3.9 l/100km and releasing 99g/km of CO2.

Although both offer more powerful engines, the A4 TDI e's nearest competitors at BMW and Mercedes-Benz for fuel efficiency are the BMW 320d (5.3 l/100km) and the Mercedes-Benz C 220 CDI BlueEfficiency (6.3 l/100km).
