We won't see all of them in Australia, but Chrysler Group has confirmed this week that the current 3.6 litre version of its new Pentastar V6 engine will make its way into 13 new and updated models by 2012.

Already, the American carmaker has unveiled updates for the Dodge Journey, Chrysler 200 (Sebring replacement) and Grand Voyager, and the Jeep Patriot, with the 3.6 litre Pentastar figuring among the powertrain options of each.

Other new and updated models to feature the new engine will include the Chrysler 300C, the Dodge Avenger, and the US-market Dodge Challenger and Charger models.

Chrysler's new family engine replaces and improves upon seven previous V6 engines, ranging in displacement from 2.7 to 4.0 litres. The 3.6 litre Pentastar V6 produces 209kW and 352Nm of torque.

In Australia, the first Chrysler Group model to feature the new engine will likely be the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, scheduled for a local debut in February next year.

Chrysler is also planning new versions of the Pentastar engine, developed to accommodate displacements from 3.0 to 4.0 litres.

“The engine architecture is designed to be competitive from 3.0 liters to 4.0 liters,” Chrysler's Vice President of Engine Engineering, Bob Lee said. “For today's vehicles, a 3.6-liter is the right size now.”

Lee said that as new models are created and new economy-minded transmissions are developed, a 3.1 or 3.3 litre version of the Pentastar engine would be the likely course.
