Sydney motorists can expect plenty of surprises this morning, with the State Government and the City of Sydney kicking off the first steps in its Transforming Sydney project.

Announced in September, the changes include extended clearway times and longer bus lane operating hours.

With a focus on improving public transport travel time, the changes are expected to offer the greatest benefit commuters travelling through Wynyard, where around 300 buses operate every hour.

New no-stopping zone hours have been created between Elizabeth and Castlereagh streets along Market Street, along with longer no-stopping times in Park Street. New peak hour weekday clearways and bus zone hours are also in operation in parts of York, Bridge and Clarence streets.

New CBD speed limits will be in operation early next year, while the shared zones in streets and laneways will be finalised later in 2011.
