Hyundai Australia has unveiled a special graffiti-covered version of its brand-new 2010 i20 light car at the Australian International Motor Show this week as it works to build interest in the already strong-selling hatch. (Particularly in the face of its in-house 'competition', the best-selling Getz).

Dubbed the i20 ArtCar, the one-off i20 was painted by Sydney graffiti artists 'Beastman' and 'Numskull' (presumably not their real names, though you can't be too sure these days), charged with the task of combining bright colours, organic patterns and an urban lifestyle theme.

With exhibitions in London and Berlin as well as here in his local Australia, Beastman draws on nature and tightly-detailed geometric patterns in what he describes as his "eternal struggle against man-made adversity."

Numskull pursues a similar theme, focusing on stencils and iconography that explore love, hate, mystery and fantasy while drawing on a love for controversy and humour.

Launched in Australia in July, the Hyundai i20 has sold 929 cars year-to-date, with 466 sales to its credit for September. Those numbers will likely take a leap when the popular but ageing Getz is retired next year.

The i20 is also helped by a range of updates announced this month that include Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity as standard equipment, along with the added safety of side and curtain airbags across the i20 range.

Like the Getz, the i20 offers both 1.4 and 1.6 litre petrol engines, mated to manual and automatic transmissions.
