Porsche's upcoming 918 Spyder Hybrid is a precursor to a future line-up that will see a hybrid powertrain available with every model the German carmaker offers, according to development boss Wolfgang Duerheimer.

Speaking with industry paper Automotive News this week, Duerheimer pointed to the tightening European emissions laws as the main motivator in Porsche's push for increased hybrid development - an issue that Italian counterpart Ferrari has also found itself battling.

“We want to learn how we can electrify all our sports cars in the future with the help of this short production run," Duerheimer said. “In the future, we will have hybrid drive in every model line."

In the past year, Porsche has already revealed or launched hybrid versions of its upmarket passenger vehicles, the Cayenne SUV and the Panamera sports saloon.

The Cayenne Hybrid is powered by an Audi-sourced 3.0 litre V6 mated to a 35kW electric motor - an arrangement the Panamera is likely to utilise also.

Porsche's dedicated sports models would likely take a different tack however, leaning more to the 918 Spyder's axle-mounted electric motors - a combination that produces 160kW on their own.

The adoption of hybrid technology isn't Porsche's only plan though, with Duerheimer adding that four-cylinder engines could also be considered - if the performance is right.

"If the CO2 guidelines require it, then our engines will become smaller and may have just four cylinders," he said.

“The important thing is that the performance has to be right. The 911 must always be on the cutting edge.”

Duerheimer added that no matter which direction the company takes with future powertrains, the focus will be on power and weight, with each new generation of Porsche expected to weigh 10 percent less than its predecessor.
