Renault Australia has this week announced the local launch of the 2011 Renault Fluence, starting at $22,990 and set to go on sale in Australia from November.

Initially launched overseas in late 2009 and based on the Korean-market Samsung SM3, the Fluence is built on Renault's C platform and shares its underpinnings with the third-generation Megane hatch.

As with the Megane hatch, the Fluence is powered by a 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine delivering 103kW and 195Nm of torque, with fuel consumption listed at 7.8 l/100km on the combined cycle.

The 2.0 litre engine is paired with either a six-speed manual or CVT automatic transmission.

In Australia, Renault will offer the Fluence sedan alongside the Megane hatch, with both models starting at the same price. Along with the Koleos SUV, the Fluence and Hatch will stand as Renault's volume-selling consumer offerings.

“Renault is announcing significant investment in Renault Australia that will deliver the Renault brand long term status as a key player in the Australian automotive market. This is in addition to the refreshed and highly competitive product portfolio," Renault Australia Managing Director Justin Hocevar said.

The Fluence is well-served in the small car segment when it comes to its dimensions, with its 4618mm length and 2702mm wheelbase making it one of the roomier options in its class.

Like the upcoming Renault Megane, the Fluence's features list includes the Renault smart key card (for keyless unlocking and engine starting), integrated satellite navigation (standard on Privilege), Bluetooth connectivity, multimedia connectivity and dual zone climate control air conditioning - an uncommon advantage in the small car segment.

Standard safety systems include ESP, ABS with EBD and Emergency Brake Assist, along with six airbags, three-point belts for all seats and adjustable front headrests.

There is cruise control with speed limiter function, automatic headlamps and windscreen wipers, along with fog lights and rear parking sensors (on Privilege).

Watch TMR for next month's launch of the Renault Fluence.
