nissan townpod electric zero emission vehicle concept 13

Despite its LEAF electric vehicle nearing delivery in Japan and the US, Nissan is about to add to the growing count of electric vehicles appearing globally with yet another EV concept.

Nissan's latest all-electric 'zero emission' concept, debuting at Paris today and looking like a next-generation Nissan (rounded) Cube, has been dubbed 'Townpod'.

Nissan says the Townpod has been developed with a view to the future, where growing numbers of people working from home could lead to a limited need for larger vehicles or even regular public transport networks.

"It is designed to offer zero-emissions mobility to a future generation of home-based, innovative entrepreneurs who are creative and tech-savvy," Nissan said.

"It is more than just a car and it's more than just a van - it heralds a new-era of flexible, stylish vehicles that will bring electric-vehicle mobility to the masses."

Nissan has revealed little about the Townpod's technical specifications, except to say it features the same technology that drives the upcoming Leaf electric vehicle.

With energy provided by a lithium-ion battery park, the Nissan Leaf is powered by an electric motor producing 90kW and 280Nm of torque. Its driving range is listed at around 160km per charge.

Inside, the Nissan Townpod features a futuristic cabin bathed in bright green. Features include a dash monitor that displays speed, battery status and range. A second screen features audio and navigation controls.

While the Leaf is set to hit roads in Japan and US in the coming months and in Australia in 2012, Nissan has not revealed any plans for a production version of the Townpod.
