Following confirmation earlier this month of its coming, Subaru has today revealed details of its third-generation boxer engine, the company's first all-new engine since 1989.

With both 2.0 and 2.5 litre versions set to enter production in the coming weeks, the new engine will make its Australian debut in the 2011 Forester, scheduled to launch early next year. The new engine will likely make its way to other models, including the Impreza, Liberty and Liberty Exiga, through the course of the year.

“This is an exciting engineering development from FHI (Fuji Heavy Industries, Subaru's parent company)," Subaru Australia Managing Director Nick Senior said.

"They’re renowned for the durability of their engines and this new unit will take the sophistication to a whole new level that we’ll look forward to experiencing in some versions of our best-selling Forester next year.”

The new engine offers a longer stroke than the existing boxer, with a more compact combustion chamber and lighter moving parts.

Other features of the new engine include a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system (Ford is exploring the same technology for the next generation of its EcoBoost engines), an intake/exhaust Active Valve Control System, a Tumble Generator Valve and a more compact oil pump.

Interestingly, output and torque figures remain unchanged from the current 2.0 litre boxer, specified for the Japanese market at 109kW and 196Nm, suggesting that the new engine design is more about cleaner operation and greater efficiency.

Specific performance figures have not been revealed, although Subaru's Japanese headquarters has claimed a fuel efficiency improvement of around 10 percent over the existing boxer engine.
