SUZUKI KIZASHI SPORT AWD

Nearly four months on from the launch of the front-wheel-drive Kizashi XL and XLS in Australia, Suzuki has today announced availability of the 2010 Suzuki Kizashi Sport AWD.

Entering as the flagship of the Kizashi range, the Sport AWD carries a $3000 premium over the auto-equipped XLS and adds new wheels, a sportier front bumper and Suzuki's i-AWD (intelligent all-wheel-drive) system.

“The Kizashi Sport AWD represents the ultimate version of our vision of design, performance and driving dynamics,” Suzuki Australia General Manager, Tony Devers said.

The 2010 Kizashi Sport AWD is powered by the same 2.4 litre DOHC in-line four-cylinder engine that drives both the XL and XLS (an earlier version debuted with the 2008 Grand Vitara), producing 131kW and 230Nm of torque.

Only one transmission is available with the Sport AWD: Suzuki's CVT automatic transmission, with steering-mounted paddles allowing drivers to manually shift ratios.

The Sport AWD gets a styling boost over the base XL and mid-level XLS, getting new 10 spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, a new sports-mesh lower grille, new sports front bumper, side skirts, and chromed bodyside garnishes and fog-lamp bezels.

There is a more pronounced lip spoiler on the boot lid, and suspension is 10mm lower than the Sport AWD's front-wheel-drive siblings.

Inside, the Sport AWD is largely unchanged from the XLS spec upon which it is based. There is however a unique chrome-trimmed steering wheel with factory-fitted Bluetooth wireless connectivity controls, along with silver stitching to the leather seats, handbrake lever and gear lever.

Devers describes the Kizashi Sport AWD's intelligent all-wheel-drive system as a 'sixth sense', designed to anticipate oversteer or understeer and splitting drive to either the front or rear wheels to compensate.

“For example, when you accelerate from rest, the system detects the extra throttle input and automatically sends drive to the rear wheels to ensure a smooth and safe take-off,” he said.

Suzuki's i-AWD system features a wet-type multi-plate clutch coupling, modulating the degree of magnetic clutch action for optimum traction.

The coupling is regulated with an electrical current alternating between the two and all-wheel drive modes, based on data supplied by the array of sensors including wheel, steering wheel, yaw and lateral G.

In a first for Suzuki, the transfer case features a force-fed internal lubrication system to ensure improved durability.

The AWD system can be engaged on the fly by pressing the dash-mounted switch.

“The launch of the production car earlier this year confirmed Suzuki’s arrival as a major player in the global market," Devers said.

“Now, with the arrival of the Kizashi Sport AWD, we can offer Australian customers a range of premium mid-sized vehicles that surpasses anything else on the market for performance, dynamics and value for money."
