Following the cancellation of the Japanese-market four-door FD2 Civic Type R earlier this year, Honda confirmed this week that the UK-built Civic Type R hatch is to be discontinued in European markets, thanks to the EU's tightening emissions laws.

Luckily for Honda's pocket rocket, there are other markets outside the EU that do not yet adhere to Euro V emissions regulations, due for introduction in Europe, January 2011. This means that for now at least, the Civic Type R hatch has gained a reprieve.

It's safe in Australia too; with our government's slow crawl towards Euro V, Honda Australia has confirmed that the FN2 Civic Type R will remain on the local market.

It's unknown at this stage if the hatch will gain the necessary upgrades in the future to make it compliant with Euro V requirements, but with Honda pulling it entirely from the European market, any significant changes to the model are unlikely.

Recent spy photos however have revealed that testing for the next-generation 2012 Civic is well underway, meaning we could see the Type R badge return to Civic models around the World in the next two to three years.

Launched internationally in 2007, the Civic Type R hatch arrived in Australia in 2008. Around 1840 have been sold since.
