2011 Volkswagen Caddy Revealed, Australian Launch Late 2010

2011 VOLKSWAGEN CADDY

A little more than a year since it was first spied testing in Europe, Volkswagen has revealed the updated-for-2011 Volkswagen Caddy in Europe.

Largely an update of the outgoing model, the bulk of the external changes for the 2011 Caddy are up front, with Volkswagen's new family face leading the update.

Speaking with TMR today, Volkswagen Australia's Karl Gehling confirmed that while the revised Caddy is due in Australia toward the end of this year, pricing and specifications are still being determined.

Available in five-seater and light commercial van variants (although Australia will likely see only the commercial variant), the European-market 2011 Caddy features a removable second seating row on all models, allowing for 3030 litres of storage for the Caddy and 3880 litres for the longer Caddy Maxi.

A new range of turbocharged, direct-injected petrol and diesel engines will be offered with the 2011 Caddy. In Europe, the engine range includes four diesel engines producing 55kW, 77kW, 82kW and 105kW.

Volkswagen's six-speed DSG transmission is available with the 77kW and 105kW diesel engines, and the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system is available with the 82kW engine.

The 55kW and 77kW engines can also be optioned with Volkswagen's BlueMotion technology, featuring Start/Stop and a regenerative braking system that stores energy otherwise lost in braking.

On the petrol front, the European-market Caddy is offered with two variants of Volkswagen's turbo-charged four-cylinder 1.2 litre TSI, producing 65kW and 78kW.

Fuel consumption for the 78kW petrol engine is listed at 6.6 l/100km, making for a 21 percent improvement over the previous generation's 1.6 litre engine.

In Australia, the current-generation Caddy Van range is available in either standard or long-wheelbase (Caddy Maxi) variants. A 1.6-litre petrol or 1.9-litre TDI diesel engine are available with a five-speed manual transmission fitted to both engines. The TDI diesel can also be optioned with Volkswagen's popular six-speed DSG transmission to make light work of inner-city jobs.

Australian pricing and specifications are expected to be revealed closer to the 2011 Caddy launch later this year.

    Lookin' at this new Caddy the more I like Skoda's Roomster which is so underrated.

    Perhaps, but the Skoda doesnt have a commercial version which will be 90% of the Caddy sales.
