A fleet of electric vehicles is heading to the heart of Australia's V8 racing culture at Bathurst this month. The reason? Some 17 participating councils from Western NSW are pushing to have regional areas included in the EV infrastructure network.

Under pressure from rising fuel prices, the participating councils want to see EV charging stations in operation across the state's regional areas by 2015.

Dubbed Recharging the Region, the event at Mount Panorama will see a range of electric cars and bikes displayed, including the Tesla Roadster (due to launch in Australia in the near future), along with a number of recharge technologies displayed by partner groups Better Place Australia, Chargepoint and Ecotality.

Also on display will be a group of electric vehicles built by inventors around Australia, including a quad bike and an electrified Mitsubishi Triton.

The event has been organised by Centroc, a body established to represent the central NSW councils. As part of the 2015 goal, Centroc aims to boost tourism by linking up with public transport services and giving visitors the option of hiring an electric vehicle at their destination.

The vehicles could then be driven from town to town, switching into a new vehicle at each destination.
