Weeks after enduring a media maelstrom over the US-market Lexus GX 460 and its potential for roll-over in an accident, Toyota has confirmed this week that it is beginning another global Lexus recall that will affect 1120 vehicles in Australia.

In Australia, the recall will affect the LS 600hL hybrid, the LS 460, the GS 460 and the GS 450h hybrid. Although it is not due in Australia until later this year - a fact the Japanese carmaker will be thankful for - the IS 350 is also being recalled.

Unfortunately for Toyota Australia and its Lexus luxury arm, the problem is a relatively minor engine issue that might otherwise have escaped so much international attention if not for the world-number-one carmaker's horror run over the past 12 months.

Toyota says the cause of the recall is the discovery of faulty valve springs in the company's 3.5 litre V6 and its 4.6 and 5.0 litre V8 engines - a trio of powertrains that are used across six Toyota and Lexus models worldwide.

Possible effects of the engine problem, which Toyota says may have been caused by foreign material contaminating the valve springs in the manufacturing process, include abnormal engine noise or unstable idling, with the rare chance of the engine stalling unexpectedly.

Toyota Australia says that while there have been local reports of engine misfires, there have been no known instances of engine failure in Australia.

The recall is specific to engines built between February 2007 to August 2008, which could mean cars assembled in the months following August 2008.

Lexus has confirmed that affected customers in Australia will be given a loan car while their vehicle is being repaired.
