With the likes of the BMW X6 and the Acura ZDX (US-market only) setting the pace, Mercedes-Benz is reportedly working on a 'coupe crossover' of its own - albeit on a smaller scale.

Purportedly dubbed 'GLC' - a name Mercedes registered some time ago - a new report by German magazine Auto Zeitung this week suggests the luxury carmaker is looking to the platform underpinning its next-generation B-Class for its latest experiment.

By entering the coupe crossover market with a smaller body shape (and a lower price), it is likely hoped that competition for the new model will be kept to a minimum.

BMW is reportedly working on a smaller version of its own coupe-SUV crossover.

Of course, with Land Rover set to unveil its upcoming compact crossover this week and BMW reportedly working on a 3 Series-sized 'X4' crossover, there may be enough competition to turn this small coupe crossover idea into a genuine segment.

Little else is known about the project, although engine options will reportedly include a 150kW 1.8 litre four-cylinder engine and a 2.2 litre turbodiesel producing 190kW.
