The next-generation Maserati Quattroporte is set to make a technological leap, with CEO Harald J Wester promising all-wheel-drive, stop-start technology and a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.

Speaking with industry paper Automotive News this week, Mr Wester said the new technology will help Maserati gain a stronger foothold against rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

In a push to meet Europe's ever-tightening emissions laws, the company will also take on downsized V6 and V8 engines from within the Fiat empire.

Earlier reports have suggested that the new Quattroporte will compete with the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class, entering at a price point around US$10,000 lower than the current model.

Wester said that Maserati's global sales are on track for a 15 percent increase over 2009 - growth that might ordinarily seem impressive, if not for last year's sales (4489 globally) being 49 percent lower than in 2008.
