While MINI works to bring production versions of the stylish Coupe and Roadster concepts to market, the BMW-owned British carmaker has today launched the updated-for-2011 MINI line-up, with a number of styling and mechanical changes coming to the MINI, MINI Clubman and MINI Convertible.

Styling

On the styling front, the 2011 MINI line-up gets a new-look front bumper and bonnet across the range, designed to improve pedestrian protection in the event of an accident.

Other new styling features include tweaked headlight internals, updated and repositioned side markers, and LED tail lights for all variants. There are also five new paint schemes and new alloy wheel designs.

The updated MINI is 99mm longer than the outgoing model, offering larger deformation zones to reduce the risk of injury in a collision with a pedestrian or cyclist. The new model maintains the MINI proportions however, including the short overhangs front and rear.

Interior

In the cabin, there's a subtly revised centre stack, along with similarly modest changes to the steering wheel, air-conditioning and stereo. New trim and fascia options round out the interior updates.

All MINI steering wheels now feature carbon black spokes, and extra attention has gone into the interior's ergonomics, allowing greater access to rear space and increased comfort for passengers.

There are also revised radio control knobs for improved feel, and the Extended Light package now uses three LEDs to provide a broader spectrum of colour choices, along with brightness control.

The range of seat upholstery, interior colours, trim elements and colour lines for all other models of the new MINI family has also been revised.

Among the newly introduced options are the Cross Check cloth/leather combination, the interior colour Polar Beige, along with trim elements in Striped Alloy, Black Checkered, plus Satellite Grey and Toffee.

Equipment

Bluetooth Hands Free Kit with USB audio interface, fog lights on Cooper models, rain sensors with automatic headlight control and floor mats are now standard.

Options include adaptive headlights in conjunction with optional bi-xenon lights. A new anti-dazzle function for the interior and exterior mirrors is available, along with the MINI Radio Visual Boost package.

  • Operation by means of MINI joystick in the tunnel console
  • High resolution 6.5” colour liquid crystal display integrated into the central round instrument.
  • Display of the on-board computer functions in the central round instrument
  • Speedometer as circumferential scale in the central round instrument

MINI Business Navigation System

The new Business navigation system replaces the Professional navigation.

  • MINI Radio Visual Boost
  • Guidance system with voice output, arrow pointer and map display on the high resolution central display
  • Daytime and night time modes selectable for display
  • Operation of the Navigation system via a navigation joystick in the tunnel console
  • GPS aerial integrated in the roof aerial
  • Map material flashed to system memory
  • Update of the navigation system via USB interface in the glove compartment possible

Mechanical

Diesel

The updated MINI family gets an all-new aluminium 1.6 litre diesel four-cylinder, featuring the same common-rail direct-injection and turbocharging technology used in BMW's 2.0 litre diesel engine.

With this new engine, the Cooper D now offers 82kW and 270Nm (up from 80kW/240Nm), powering to 100km/h in 9.7 seconds - a marginal improvement over the outgoing model.

Already one of Australia's most fuel-efficient models in its Cooper D guise, fuel consumption is listed at 3.8 l/100km (down from 3.9 l/100km) and CO2 emissions are rated at 99g/km.

MINI's "MINIMALISM" technology is grouped into model-specific combinations, including systems such as Brake Energy Regeneration, the Auto Start/Stop function, Shift Point Display, and electromechanical power steering (EPS).

A standard six-speed manual gearbox channels the engine power to the wheels, while the MINI Cooper D comes with a new, self-adjusting clutch, along with improved gear synchronisation thanks to a carbon coating for the clutch linings.

Petrol

MINI's existing 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, introduced in March, carries over to the 2011 range. Output is rated at 90kW in the MINI Cooper and 135kW for the MINI Cooper S.

The Cooper and Cooper S petrol models are equipped with fully variable valve management, based on the VALVETRONIC system used in BMW engines. In the MINI Cooper S, MINI Cooper S Clubman and MINI Cooper S Convertible it joins forces with petrol direct injection and a twin-scroll turbocharger, improving fuel consumption.

In the MINI Cooper S, the engine brings a 0-100km/h sprint time of 7.0 seconds, with fuel consumption listed at 6.3 l/100km.
