2010 Ford Mondeo TDCi Diesel Update Announced, Third Quarter Debut Planned

FORD AUSTRALIA has today announced the arrival of an upgraded MB Mondeo diesel range, scheduled to go on sale in the third quarter of this year.

At the same time, the Mondeo range will be joined by a diesel wagon, announced alongside the cancellation of the Falcon Wagon in March.

Powered by an updated Euro V-compliant version of the current 2.0 litre Duratorq TDCi engine, the new Mondeo diesel range will offer 120kW (up 17kW) and 340Nm of torque (up 20Nm).

Fuel consumption is also significantly improved, the updated engine using up to 19 percent less fuel than its predecessor. For the new Mondeo LX TDCi hatch, fuel consumption is listed at 5.9 l/100km, compared to 7.3 l/100km for the current model.

The TDCi diesel versions of the the Zetec hatch, Titanium hatch and LX wagon all list a fuel consumption of 6.2 l/100km, a 15 percent improvement over the previous generation TDCi engine.

By comparison, the Toyota Hybrid Camry lists a fuel consumption figure of 6.0 l/100km.

The improvements to the Duratorq TDCi come courtesy of a next-generation combustion system design, featuring a lower compression ratio, increased combustion chamber diameter and reduced swirl.

There is also a new higher-pressure common-rail fuel injection system with advanced multi-hole injectors, and smaller low-inertia variable-geometry turbochargers.

The new diesel will be paired with Ford's six-speed PowerShift dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Unlike the current line-up, the new diesel engine will be offered with all model lines in the Mondeo range - LX, Zetec and Titanium - as well as with both hatch and wagon bodystyles. In total, six diesel variants will be available.

"There has been a growing acceptance of diesel technology within the Medium car segment over the past few years and Mondeo has played a key part in that evolution, with diesel-powered models now accounting for more than half of all Mondeos sold," Ford Australia's Beth Donovan said.

The updated Mondeo range will also gain roof rails as standard equipment for all wagon variants - solid black for the LX wagon and a silver finish for Zetec and Titanium models.

Mondeo variants fitted with the updated TDCi engine and PowerShift transmission will also be equipped with Hill Launch Assist as part of an enhanced Dynamic Stability Control system.

Using the braking system, HLA is engaged when the car is stationary to prevent it from rolling. Effective on both uphill and downhill gradients, HLA is designed to provide a 2.5 second delay when the driver moves their foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal.

HLA is normally activated automatically, but the driver can also select a manual activation mode in the Human Machine Interface (HMI) instrument cluster.

Pricing and Availability

Ford has yet to announce a specific launch date for the updated Mondeo range, but it is due in showrooms some time in the third quarter of this year.

    Sounds good, but I really wish they would get rid of the horribly glitzy silver coloured centre console. It looks terrible.

    Why compare fuel economy with a Camry Hybrid?
    I wouldn't see it as a benchmark in anything besides utter pointlessness and worst in bang-for-buck-ness (besides the Prius i-Tech of course)

    i hope the powershift box is not jerky in city stop start driving like some other dsg boxes are.
