HOLDEN has today confirmed it will slow production of the current-generation VE Commodore, ahead of an update to the line-up later this year.

For 13 days across July and August, Holden's Elizabeth plant in South Australia will shut down operations, allowing Holden to reduce existing stock at dealers and holding yards.

Speaking with the Australian Associated Press today, a Holden spokesperson said that new agreements with the car industry union have allowed Holden to slow production and schedule run-out sales on the current Commodore line.

"Ahead of updating our locally produced Commodore range later this year, we need to prepare for a smooth run-out of the current model within the plant," the spokesperson told AAP.

"To do this, we have been working with the union to balance short-term manufacturing plans that will allow us to taper production of the current range, before ramping up with the new model."

The announcement follows news last month that strong international demand has seen the GM-owned carmaker boost production of its 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine.

On the sales front, Holden has had a promising start to the year, with 11,795 vehicles sold in March - up 28.4 percent on the same period last year. Its most popular model continues to be the Commodore, making up 4209 sales in March. The Cruze follows, with 2125 sales last month.

Holden is set to begin local production of the Cruze later this year, with a market launch expected in early 2011.
