FOLLOWING NEWS last December of their impending arrival, HSV has this week announced availability of the 2010 HSV ClubSport GXP and Maloo GXP, based on the US-market Pontiac G8 GXP programme.

The HSV ClubSport GXP sedan and HSV Maloo GXP ute will enter the Holden Special Vehicles line-up as limited edition entry-level models. HSV Managing Director Phil Harding described the introduction of the new models as an "outstanding opportunity" to complement the brand's existing line-up.

“We receive lots of enquiries about introducing a model to sit as an entry level to our brand and the GXP program provides us this opportunity,” Mr Harding said.

“I have always said that in order for a car to wear the HSV badge it needs to satisfy three criteria - Performance, Handling and Design. Clearly these cars tick all three boxes.”

Styling

From a styling perspective, both the ClubSport GXP and Maloo GXP are a mixed bag. Up front is the new E-Series 2 face, ensuring a connection with the rest of the HSV line-up.

At the rear and sides of both models, Holden's standard taillights and bumpers are used (apart from a unique diffuser), the ClubSport GXP getting the black-backed SS lamps and the Maloo GXP the regular lamps of the SS Ute. The ClubSport GXP also gets a lip spoiler straight off the US-market Pontiac G8 GXP.

Instead of the hard tonneau cover of the regular HSV model, the Maloo GXP gets the standard Holden-issue soft cover.

Both models feature the same 19x8-inch alloy wheels offered with the first-generation E-Series ClubSport, wearing 245/40/R19 tyres at all four corners.

Interior

Inside, both models are fitted out with the standard E-Series 2 ClubSport R8 interior, with sports cloth seats.

Equipment

As with the interior trim, the equipment and features of the two GXP models are largely unchanged from HSV's regular offerings.

Among the few changes is the absence of leather trim from the GXP range's options list, but both models feature chrome highlights to the external mirrors, door handles and side air vents. Beneath the Pontiac-style bonnet, a silver engine cover sets the engine bay apart from its regular HSV siblings.

HSV has also kept its advanced stability control system from the GXP line-up, and optional extras include satellite navigation, rear park assist, sunroof and a roof-mounted DVD player for the ClubSport GXP.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) incorporating ABS, EBD, EBA and TCS, is standard.

Mechanical

Both the ClubSport GXP and Maloo GXP are powered by HSV's 6.2 litre LS3 V8, offering the same 317kW of power and 550Nm of torque as the 'regular' ClubSport. HSV's standard six-speed manual transmission is standard with both models.

On the suspension front, the ClubSport GXP uses the same setup found in the US-market Pontiac G8 GXP, a softer tune than the usual HSV arrangement.

The Maloo GXP features the Holden Ute's front suspension, while the rear end is treated to a mix of Holden and HSV components and tuning.

Braking is handled by a Brembo package, with 355mm ventilated discs and four-piston calipers up front and 324mm ventilated discs at the rear with single-piston calipers.

Pricing

According to HSV, the GXP line-up will hit showrooms in the coming weeks, with only 400 ClubSport GXPs and 350 Maloo GXPs scheduled for production. At this time, there are no plans to extend the range beyond the current limited numbers.

The two new models will debut with a drive-away price. The ClubSport GXP retails for $61,990 in manual form, and the manual Maloo GXP is priced at $55,990. Automatic versions attract a $2000 premium.
