TOYOTA AUSTRALIA has confirmed today that reports of a US-market steering problem for the Toyota Corolla are not a concern for Australian customers.

The US Government is set to launch a formal investigation on the reports, examining more than 150 complaints about late-model Corollas received by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

"When driving on the highway (60+ mph), the vehicle will all of a sudden start to wander back and forth in the lane, for a few hundred yards," reads a complaint about a 2010 Corolla received by NHTSA. "Then as quickly as it started, it stops. The wandering has almost created four collisions so far."

According to Toyota Australia, the electric power-steering system used in Corolla models sold in Australia is different from the system used in the United States.
