2010 Volkswagen Golf R and GTD Confirmed For 2nd Quarter 2010, Amarok 4th Quarter, Scirocco Still Under Consideration

Mike Stevens | Feb 12, 2010

NEWS FROM THE 2010 Volkswagen Golf Wagon launch: Volkswagen Australia Managing Director Anke Koeckler confirmed to TMR that the second quarter of this year will see local debuts for the Golf R and Golf GTD, while the Amarok will land in the fourth quarter.

While that may be good news for hot-hatch, diesel and ute fans, the popular Scirocco - and its higher-performance alter ego, the Scirocco R - are still on the wishlist.

"For sure customers love the car, but we have to consider where we could position it (the Scirroco). We would never launch a car where there is 100 percent substitution (with other Volkswagen performance models)," Ms Koeckler told TMR today.

"We have to have additional volume, and new customers."

In Ms Koeckler's view, the Scirocco R has the potential to stand as an alternative to the likes of Porsche and the Audi TT: "if the customer is looking at those two, they might also consider the Scirocco".

Unfortunately for Volkswagen fans waiting on the Scirocco, the business case for an introduction into the small Australian market is still to be made. The impression today, however, is that Volkswagen Australia seems to be warming to the notion.

Hurry up and offer the Scirocco VW AUS!!! I love the Golf GTI but refuse to buy it because its just so boring looking. I want to upgrade my current car, an AH Astra SRi Turbo, but I refuse to buy a car that looks worse than that. Sure the GTi is so much better than my current car, but driving the GTI feels like driving a van compared to my current sleek Astra. If only the the Scirocco was on sale VW would have a sale!!

As good as Scirocco is, it turned me off because of it's handling [READ: DULL ELECTRIC STEERING] . Just a word to you guys from us lucky buggers in NZ who've had the Scirocco (and barely any of us have them because of that)

Yes the GTD! Been waiting for this. My partner is only a P Plater, stuffing up my wish to buy a GTI. The GTD will get around those stupid RTA laws (Turbo Diesels are exempt). FIngers crossed it still has some hot hatch cred to it.

The Scirocco is already on its way to Australia as an imported used car through SEVS regulations. They should be available in the next 12 months or so, once the testing and certification process is completed.

I wouldn't mind having an Anorak when its finally released. However; I've got to ask why it isn't being sold in the home of the SUV the USA?
