Volvo Australia has today announced availability of the 2011 Volvo S60, along with pricing for all sedan variants.

According to Volvo Car Australia Managing Director, Alan Desselss, the all-new S60 is, "The most dynamic, most emotionally involving car we’ve ever manufactured, a striking sports sedan that shows Volvo’s passion for cars. Yet it is very much a true Volvo."

TMR's Tony O'Kane is attending the launch of the 2011 Volvo S60 this week. Watch for his review.

Styling

Volvo may have just pulled a rabbit out of its hat with its new styling direction. While maintaining the brand's signature styling elements, it is now pushing into fresh teritory with unique fluid designs unlike anything it has offered before.

The new S60 is not only a radical departure from the outgoing model, but it also - along with the XC60 and updated C30 - offers an indication of the Swedish manufacturer’s future design direction.

"Every single line in its design is there to transport you both physically and emotionally," Volvo Cars' Design Director Peter Horbury said.

"Its profile radiates so much coupe feeling that the rear doors come as something of a pleasant surprise when you examine the car close-up."

Creating a four-door coupe look, the S60 features a C-pillar that reaches right to the tail-lights and a belt line that climbs and terminates in a high rear deck.

The curving, flowing character line that runs along the profile of the S60 is described as a 'double wave', designed to give the car a lower, stronger stance.

The sports-car feel is continued in the frontal treatment, with a sculpted bonnet complemented by a purposeful countenance and short overhang.

"I call the design of the S60 a great evolutionary step. If you look back at the previous generation S60 (which was launched in Australia in 2000), the lineage is clear: the rounded nose, the fastback rear, and the sporty proportions," Mr Horbury said.

"That S60, and the S80 that went before, began the current Volvo styling direction, which took classic Volvo cues but made them more modern."

Interior

As with the exterior, the cabin of the S60 retains design elements from previous models - in particular the 'floating' centre stack.

"The interior has a more extrovert attitude than before, but without losing any of its practical Scandinavian roots. The all-new S60 brings us up to a whole new level when it comes to the integral experience of colour, form, material and technology," Mr Horbury said.

Offering a noticeably more modern and upmarket look than the previous-gen S60, Volvo says it has focused on perfectly integrating interior trims and materials.

Despite the four-door coupe styling, the new S60 is very much a genuine five-seater.

Knee space in the rear seat has increased by 30mm, the rear seat splits 40/60 and the boot opening has been made 107mm wider than in the previous-generation S60. The S60 offers 380 litres of storage space in the rear.

Equipment

Standard features across the range include leather upholstery, steering wheel and gear knob, electric-powered driver seat with memory function for seat and side mirrors, rain sensor wipers, park assist rear, and electric park brake with drive away release.

There is also an automatically dimming interior rearview mirror, electric climate control with pollen filters, electric windows and mirrors, Cruise control and on-board diagnostic system with Trip computer, rear armrest with cupholders and storage, 'home safe' approach lights and puddle lights in door mirrors.

An all-new infotainment system available with either a five- or seven-inch display, including entertainment, navigation and mobile phone connectivity will be available with the new S60. Connection options include auxiliary audio input, USB for iPod connectivity and Bluetooth with audio streaming.

The optional Premium Sound package features a class-D digital 5x130W amplifier, Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic II Surround, MultEQ from Audyssey Laboratories and 12 speakers.

MultEQ, a popular standard for room equalisation in homes and professional theatre use, works to remove distortion caused by the cabin's acoustics, offering a crisper and clearer sound.

Avoid a collision with a pedestrian at up to 35 km/h

As to be expected from Volvo, the new S60 is packed to the brim with innovative safety equipment.

Revealed last year, Volvo's new Collision Warning With Full Auto Brake And Pedestrian Detection system features in the S60, designed to track and anticipate the path of pedestrians and other vehicles, reacting accordingly.

According to Volvo, the system can, on its own, completely avoid any collision below 35km/h.

At higher speeds, the system will both alert the driver and slow the vehicle, lessening the risk and assisting the driver’s reaction time.

In an emergency situation the driver first receives an audible warning combined with a flashing light in the windscreen's head-up display. At the same time, the car's brakes are pre-charged. If the driver does not react to the warning and an accident is imminent, full braking power is automatically applied.

City Safety standard

Already available with the Volvo XC60, the new S60 will feature the City Safety system as standard equipment.

With City Safety, the car automatically brakes if the driver fails to react in time when the vehicle in front slows down or stops, or if he or she is driving too fast towards a stationary object.

The system can lessen or even entirely avoid low-speed rear-end impacts at speeds up to 30 kilometres an hour.

Mechanical

From launch, the 2010 Volvo S60 will be offered with two powertrains; the 3.0 litre petrol T6 and the 2.5 litre five-cylinder D5 diesel engine.

In the first quarter of 2011, Volvo Australia will launch the direct-injected and turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol T5 turbo engine.

T6 Petrol Engine

The updated 3.0 litre T6 petrol engine, producing 224kW and 440Nm of torque, takes the new S60 to 100km/h in 6.1 seconds.

Fuel consumption is down 10 percent for the T6 engine, now listed at 10.2 l/100km.

D5 Diesel Engine

The twin-turbo D5 high-performance diesel engine, developing 151kW and 420Nm of torque, will cover the 0-100km/h sprint in 8.1 seconds.

Fuel consumption is listed at 7.1 l/100km.

T5 Petrol Engine (Q1 2011)

The turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder T5 petrol engine has a 2.5 litre capacity, producing 177kW and 320Nm of torque.

The 0-100km/h sprint is covered in a respectable 7.5 seconds, and fuel consumption is listed at 8.3 l/100km.

Transmissions And AWD/FWD

Power for both the T6 and D5 models will be distributed to all four wheels by Volvo's All Wheel Drive system and mated to Volvo's six-speed Adaptive Geatronic transmission, offering the choice of manual gear selection or a more responsive 'Sport' mode.

This transmission also features a neutral control function, which lowers fuel consumption and reduces emissions by automatically switching from Drive to Neutral when the car comes to a complete stop.

The T5 model's new engine will drive the front wheels and feature Volvo's Powershift dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Brakes And Suspension

Braking is managed across the range by ventilated discs up front and solid discs at the rear. Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Brake Distribution and Emergency Brake Assist are also featured.

All 2011 S60 variants feature coilover strut front suspension with anti-dive and anti-lift functions, and multi-link independent suspension at the rear. There are also anti-roll bars front and rear and Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC).
