With compact SUV sales on the march in Australia, Volkswagen has announced their official entry into this thriving segment of the Australian market for the first time with their all new Tiguan.

The Tiguan will be available with three engine specifications including two TSI petrol engines with 125kW & 147kW and one TDI sporting 103kW. All engine variants are turbo-charged and the diesel features what VW describe as a ‘remarkably quiet’ common rail TDI combined with Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), a combination that already satisfies the Euro-5 standards taking effect throughout Europe in 2009.

Both the petrol and diesel engines are combined with 6 speed manual and automatic transmissions, and Volkswagen's latest generation 4MOTION all wheel drive system. In manual form the Tiguan is capable of being driven at an engine speed of 1,000 rpm or equating to a vehicle speed of just 6.69 km/h.

The Tiguan is safe as well, having recently been awarded a five star EuroNCAP safety rating helped no-doubt by the standard fitment of six airbags and Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP). The Tiguan earned five stars for passenger protection, four stars for child safety and two stars for pedestrian protection to lead the overall evaluation in its class.

Standard on-board convenience features also include a multi-function leather steering wheel, cruise control and a Radio/ CD player with MP3 compatibility, Aux input and eight loud speakers, semi-automatic air conditioning system, four electric windows, electrically adjustable and heated outside mirrors, Multifunctional Display 'plus' (trip computer), remote central locking and various storage compartments and bins. On the outside, all Tiguan variants feature alloy wheels and roof rails as standard fitment.

Optional across the Tiguan range is an ‘off-road’ switch. The off-road switch controls a host of driver assistance systems including hill descent assistant, electronic differential locks and hill ascent assistance among others.

The new Tiguan is also available with a number of innovative new options such as Park Assist technology, an electrically operated panoramic glass sunroof and Volkswagen's new RNS510 satellite navigation system with Rear View Camera (RVCPlus).

One of the big benefits associated with SUV style vehicles is the added space that they offer and the Tiguan is no exception having the ability to stow up to 1,510 litres and 650kg of luggage when the seats are folded flat. Other interior features include a 60:40 split rear bench, a front passenger seat that folds and enough room to accommodate five adults.

Recommended retail pricing for the Tiguan starts at $33,990 for the manual 125kW TSI, $35,990 for the TDI manual and $42,990 for the auto only 147kW TSI.

Initially only the diesel Tiguan will be available with both petrol TSI variants finding their way to dealer forecourts in October.
