THE FORD MONDEO - Runner Up in TMR's Best Drive, Best Value Awards for 2009 - is set for one final facelift ahead of a new global model in 2014, according to reports out of Europe this week.

A Mondeo test mule spied late last year adds credence to the reports. Besides a visual nip and tuck, the facelifted model is expected to feature a revised drivetrain line-up, likely including Ford's new EcoBoost four-cylinder petrol engine and six-speed Powershift transmission.

Earlier this month, Ford unveiled the 2011 Ford Focus - the first of its new global models developed under the "One Ford" plan established by CEO Alan Mulally.

The new Mondeo is expected to also replace the US-market Ford Fusion, with design and development of the mid-sized sedan to be managed by the company's North American operations.

Early last year, Ford Vice-President of Global Product Programs, Joe Bakaj, told Automotive News that talent from the right across Ford’s global operations will work on the project.

“We’re trying to balance the workload between the engineering centres, and so the cars are going to be led out of North America but with a global team.”

The new model is not expected to have any ties with Mazda platforms, despite a recent announcement that the two companies will continue to cooperate on new technology.

As with the Focus, Ford's new mid-sizer is expected to be sold globally with only basic differences - such as right-hand-drive versions - expected for certain regions.
