SET TO REPLACE both the 407 and the larger 607, the 2011 Peugeot 508 has been spied cold-weather testing in Europe this week.

Announced by PSA Peugeot Citroen President Philippe Varin last year, the upcoming 508 is expected to be larger than the 407 and smaller than the executive-sized 607.

The 508 will mark the return of Peugeot's "five-0" designated models, last seen on the 505 from 1979 to around 1992. The 505 garnered praise from the media at the time, and Peugeot is no doubt hoping history will repeat itself with the 508.

Peugeot has yet to offer any details for the successor to the 407 and 607, and little is known about the 508 at this early stage.

The 508 is expected to be built on the same platform underpinning the Citroen C5, with production to be handled at the same factory in Rennes, France.

The French carmaker is expected to reveal a 508 concept at this year's Paris Motor Show, with the production version to be launched at Geneva in 2011.

The 607 was sold in Australia, and many other markets. If this is replacing the 407 and 607, does this mean that the 607-based, sensational Citroen C6 will die off too?
