Toyota’s dominance of the Australian automotive landscape continues. Having filled the two top spots in April sales with their HiLux and Corolla comes the news that their Camry has claimed the title of the best-selling Australian-made car.
A record number of 111,891 Camry sedans were produced last year at Toyota’s Altona plant in Melbourne’s west and sold on domestic and export markets.
Camry was the only Australian-built car with annual production exceeding 100,000 vehicles.
Only around a quarter of the Camrys produced were sold in Australia with Aussie motorists buying more than 26,300 Camry sedans – but that was still enough to make the Camry the country’s best-selling mid-size car by a margin of more than two-to-one over its nearest rival.
The vast majority of Australian-made Camry sedans - more than 85,500 cars - were exported and sold in more than 20 countries.
Domestic and export sales combined to make Camry the top-selling Australian-made car. Not content to rest on its laurels, Toyota is adding to the appeal of the four-cylinder Camry for Australians shopping in the mid-size segment with the release of the Camry Ateva L special-edition model, which features more than $2000 of equipment for no extra cost.
Special-edition features include leather seats and door trim, 17-inch alloy wheels, a lip spoiler and badging all for the same standard Ateva price of $33,750*.
Toyota has also made a running upgrade to the Camry Grande, adding 17-inch alloy wheels as standard with no change to the $39,990*.
* Recommended retail prices exclude dealer delivery, government and statutory charges and optional extras.

Congrats to Toyota…………do they have snooze alarms as an option to stop you falling asleep whilst driving one of the Worlds most boring cars though.Ill take a Mazda 626 over a Camry ANY DAY thanks.
Bav, an interesting point though - the people who buy Camrys buy them because of their reliability and practicality - but what would make you want to buy a Camry more? What would make it more desirable?
Buying a Camry is like buying Bread and Milk, you do it because you need too, not because you want too.
Yawn, it’s a Camry. ’nuff said.
Very impressive marketing and exports are some of the very few positives I could think of about a Camaurion.
The Camry only sold 26,300 IN AUSTRALIA.
Commodore sold 57,307
The imported Corolla sold 47,792
Yep……………WATTO_F6,perhaps Toyota should think about making Corollas in Australia. shake shake….you awake!! Watto_F6….shhhhhhI think hes gone for a drive in a Camry. Its quiet safe it has curtain bags………
Hey do young people drive Toyota’s as seriously I dont think so. Sad are the bygone days when a eager lad wanted to fulfill driving ambitions and enthusiasm to be seen outside the Video store or cruising the boulevard in there hot GT4 Celica. Or maybe a svelte hottie such as an MR2……OH THE PAIN!
Know we have a Corolla? LMAO LOUDLY!
Wouldn’t be surprised if Corolla’s start rolling off the line here BM. Holden are already looking at following Ford’s lead in planning to manufacture a local small car.
Yes NM, the days of an exciting Toyota like Celica and MR2 and Supra in Oz seem to be gone. Instead we get TRD Aurion *sigh*
I’d like to see a locally built small car from Holden
However; I think that if/when Holdens plans to expand the Factory at Elizabeth are approved.. the extra lines would would be used to build the Compact Torana [sedan/coupe]
If they did build a small car they would have to call it the Gemini
The Mazda 6 is a car with better looks better perfromance better features not to mention better value for money.. infact I believe that given Mazdas new looks Toyota should watch out for their cross town rival.. as doe a number of overseas motoring journalists who say the Mazda 6 is a Camry Killer
Yet Toyota have a thing for resting on their laurels
You don’t think an Astra made in Oz could be possible Wheelnut?
It’ll be interesting to see if GMH do an Astra-type FWD or the compact RWD Torana.
Oh…….Wheelnut why did you have to mention Gemini???
Now all I can think of is that old jingle and think of the Bleached blonde, bubble gum jean wearing girls that are topped of with white C.F.M Boots………Im sure all those old enough remember why they were called those! A Gemini……….please now a Scorpio would be a sexy car……hahaha
One of the things that Toyota do well is appeal to the person who has no interest in cars, which is the majority of the population. IMO this is the secret to their success.
We might not understand it being enthusiasts but those that aren’t don’t invest the same emotion in their new car purchase as we might. Its a far more clinical process and the FWD/RWD, V6 or V8 argument just doesn’t exist for them.
So, a car that is perceived to be reliable, well built, safe, relatively economical and also retains reasonable value after 3-5 years ticks all of their major boxes. At the moment, Toyota have that market stitched up.
Enthusiasts just love to hate em for it!
Haha, spot on Steane. I’m an enthusiast.
Agree Watto
Nice spin by Toyota: “according to figures released today by Toyota, the best-selling Australian-made car is in fact the humble Camry”
But note NOT best selling in Australia.
Heya Bret, are you getting sick of arguing with the Dingo too?
As everyone knows, a Camry is decent, bland, reasonably reliable, A-B transportation. That’s its.
I find the biggest joke to be Dingo spruking up Canry in Nascar. Um… a stock car with V8 and RWD and completely different silhouette has even less to do with real road cars than the Fords and Chevs already in there. Toyota just walks in with a mammoth budget, buys out the best teams, viola, instant success. Didn’t work in F1 tho *snigger*
Yep, I’m here looking for some mature discussions.
The stack car thing….. Dingo even tried to convince people that the cars were ALL toyota, roof to rims.
Well, Duck was asking BM where she was blogging now. We’re hoping Dingo doesn’t find this site.
I don’t personally have anything against the Camry/Aurion, having never owned one and never will. (Well, except for the fugly badge-bulge front end) It just annoys me how their marketing sucks people in.
For example, claimed 200 killer-wasps. Haha, 5kw more than Falcon but way, WAY less torque. 200 so they can say “200″ not “a number less than 200″.
ADR fuel figure of 9.9L/100kms. So they can say “less than 10L/100kms”. How convenient. Funny how noone has been able to replicate that. Yet Wheels and Motor have already been bettering FG’s claimed figures of 10.5 for 5-speed and 10.1 for ZF6.
My sister however had 5th gear crap itself in her mid-90s Camry (poor hard-facing on the gear) after 60,000kms. The replacement gearbox did the exact same thing.
I didn’t get where Dingo said about the stock car being ALL Toyota. As I’ve said before, when I realise a post is from him or one of his many aliases, I just skip to the next. Regurgitated.
DINGO……off to confession if ya raise that fleabags name! Absolute wally he is!
ahhh,it is the same Bret.Welcome to some car talk babe! Now you know where our new site is ! No looking over your shoulder for a Dog………
The Torana is a goer as it will also become the new G6. It will either be built on the Alpha [a modified Zeta] Platform or the same Platform as the new Insigina both of which can take AWD as well as RWD
I don’t think that Holden would build a small car here [unless they take over Tonsley Park] given that CEO Mark Reuss is apparently in Europe looking at the Opel Insigina and other Models which could mean no more Daewoos…woo-hoo
Cool so no you and I “n ” Gemini! Phew……
The Vast Majority of Camrys are Exported.. and I expect the vast majority of them are Beige
Beige on Beige …………..
wtf….gemini. me thinks “sandman” with heavy duty rear shocks to cut body roll! OOOOOOOCH (someone tell mange man its OOOOOUCH)
Seems like Toyota will be getting GM to produce Prius cars in California USA……………Toyota muscle at work! Yeah right! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! WHAT A JOKE AND LAUGH! To all the Toyomota Lover Tossers…..LMAO
