UNVEILED IN RACE TRIM early last year ahead of its full series debut this year, The Nissan GT-R GT1 is now ready to roll, the Japanese carmaker announced today.

Developed in partnership with Nissan tuning house NISMO and Gigawave Motorsports, four GT-R GT1 cars - two per team - will be raced in the 2010 FIA-GT1 series by Swiss Racing Team and the UK-based Sumo Power GT team.

The GT-R's 'standard' 3.8 litre twin-turbo V6 engine has been switched out for a series-specific naturally-aspirated V8. The 5.6 litre VK56DE V8 develops 448kW (600hp) and 656Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque.

A Ricardo-sourced six-speed transmission replaces Nissan’s GR6 and transfers power through a triple-plate carbon clutch. Unlike the roadgoing GT-R, the GT-R GT1 is driven at the rear wheels, as per FIA-GT1 regulations.

Sitting beneath the 18×13 inch RAYS forged wheels are six-piston calipers and dinner plate sized carbon-ceramic discs.

Weight is down significantly on the consumer model, dropping to 1350kg from a comparatively hefty 1720kg.

As befits a proper race car, the GT-R GT1 wears a full carbon-fibre NISMO body kit, huge downforce-generating 'GT' rear wing, polycarbonate windows and a vented bonnet to keep the big V8 cool.
