Holden have announced a new diesel addition to their range with the introduction of the Astra CDTi Wagon, bringing the number of diesel models in Holden’s line-up to four.
The Astra CDTi Wagon features a 1.9 litre Euro 4 compliant turbo diesel engine producing 88kW at 3500rpm and 280Nm at 2000rpm. Available with a six-speed automatic transmission only the CDTi Wagon uses fuel at the rate of 7.1 litres/100 km. An Active Select feature allows the driver to shift gears manually should they feel the need.
“The Astra CDTi Wagon will appeal to customers in search of something a little roomier as well as a vehicle that offers outstanding performance, combined with great fuel economy and safety,” said Mr Brook GM Holden’s Director of Marketing.
The Astra CDTi Wagon’s standard features include ESP® with traction control, ABS, EBD, BA driver, front passenger and front side impact airbags, full length curtain airbags, four 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps, cruise control, semi automatic climate control and trip computer. boasts ESP® as standard
On sale from the 1st June 2008, the Astra CDTi Wagon is priced at $32,490 and is available in a range of colours including:

Over 218,725 Astras have been sold in Australia to date, making Astra Holden’s second most popular nameplate behind Commodore, and Australia’s best-selling European import in 2007.

This car exists solely because of the hype on petrol prices. Added to that the Holden marketing team no doubt see Diesel as being the answer for everything, which I find disturbing within this market for smalle to medium sized cars.
At 7.1 litres/100 km and a price tag well over 30K it’s hardly good value, both in a monetary sense and fuel economy.
There are petrol vehicles in this same segment that are both cheaper to buy, and have lower fuel consumption. The Petrol powered Honda Civic VTi-L at $24,990 and fuel consumption of 6.9 litres/100 km is better value. Ford’s Focus LX at $23,990 and claimed 7.1 litres/100 km (the same as the Diesel Astra) is almost an incredible $10,000 cheaper.
Just a little over the 7 litres/100 km mark gets you into cars like the Elantra, Corolla and Lancer, which are all well under the $32,490 asking price of the Astra.
If the Astra CDTi Wagon’s (and let’s face facts, it’s more of a hatch than wagon, so you can’t use that as an excuse for the premium in price) consumption was around the 5.1 litres/100 km mark, it would be worth considering, but with Diesel being more expensive at the pump, this new Astra CDTi Wagon is an expensive proposition in more ways than one.

No thanks… our work Astra stationwagon is awful enough as it is to drive… it doesn’t need any more handling problems from that extra torque!
Am i wrong or does 7.1 litres sound a little high for what is a smallish wagon??? Also agree the Mondeo wagon is a winner just hope they bring enough diesels from the get go unlike the hatch and sedans.

This thing should do more than 7.1’s/100k’s. I regularly drive brand spanking new Vectra 1.9 diesels (Hire Cars) on long trips and get 5.6’s cruising at 130kmh. Round town the computer was showing 7.2’s stuck in Londons crawling metropolis. The performance of the 113KW version is quite frankly awesome, better than my 3.0CDTi Vectra.
Where is the CDTI Astra wagon manual? The auto is slow and has a paltry 88kw. I own a CDTI manual hatch - it is quick (237kmh on you tube) and economical (4.7l/100km @ 110), but lacks luggage space. Diesel mid range performance is addictive and I would not buy a petrol again. The performance, economy mix is sensational.
Come on Holden, roll out the manual please. The auto seems a waste of time.
Guys, I agree that 7.1 is way to high for a smallish diesel but thats what Holden are quoting. Very un-diesel like…
Back window on side needs touch of Mazda 3 as devoid of style and bland….not to mention outright bad for rear vision!

i have a skoda wagon which is bigger than the astra and used only 6.0l per 100klms and on the trip used 5.5 per 100klms, why would you bother with the astra wagon!

Wheelnut likes Astras….in Hatch form,yeah they don’t look bad but the reputation ain’t great. Still go a Focus/Mondeo

I’m seeing a quite a few diesel Mondeos getting around here now. Mostly driven by well-dressed women in their 30’s. I wonder why that is?
Even though I like the look of the Astra Sri 3 dr coupe I would go for a XR5 Focus or Mondeo more style more features
