Mazda Australia has released the first details of their revitalized RX-8 sports car range, due to arrive on our shores early in the second half of 2008.
The new RX-8 employs a myriad of mechanical upgrades, all designed to enhance the reputation and iconic status of the world’s only rotary-powered, four-door sports car.
“The Mazda RX-8 is a special car, both to us and in the automotive world, and there’s a palpable excitement in the lead-up to the new model,” said Mazda Managing Director Doug Dickson. “It’s like one long night before Christmas!”
Mazda Australia can now confirm that the new RX-8 range will consist of three models - one of which will wear the storied GT moniker.
The new Mazda RX-8 GT will hit Australian dealerships in July and will feature specially tuned sports suspension with light-weight 19-inch wheels and a wide range of modifications to the RX-8’s RENESIS rotary engine.
The original Mazda RX-8 has won more than 50 automotive awards, including 2003 International Engine of the Year and clocked up sales of more than 170,000 units around the world.
When setting the goals for the new Mazda RX-8, Mazda’s engineers chose not to mess with the original’s successful formula; instead all efforts were focused on further honing its performance and styling. Mazda RX-8 Program Manager Noboru Katabuchi named this the pursuit of “Sophisticated Dynamism”.

I drove an FD RX-7 on the track last week, and I’ve driven an RX-8 in the past.
All I can say is, please turbocharge the damned thing Mazda! The chassis is really nice in the RX-8, but its always been short on power. Go find a nicely sized water cool, ball bearing, turbo and give it some.
Yeah needs a turbo for sure. Such a good looking car, but it’ll never get legend status without turbo.
Reckon side front air intakes are to horizontal flat in line with grille and ditto for front lights…. both need gentle upturn (more so air intake) as has lost edge on looks!
I think it awsome… great to see mazda bringing a cool car into AUS. When’s the next RX7 due? The RX8 definately needs to be turboed.
Only think I don’t like it the black plastic that the number plate bolts up to. It looks like the car has a mustash!
I own an RX-8 and agree it doesnt have the sting of the RX7’s. That being said, it still does a pretty decent 400m time (14.6) and moves past 100kph in 6.4.
As for the turbo comments - this car drinks petrol like a V8 from the 70’s - add forced induction and you better consider re-mortgaging your house.
is this really what the aurora blue looks like?
its sexy it looks goods its sooooooooooooo comfy it drives well stops well handles like rails and people look at it all round i think this is one of the best lookin rx8 ever produced ..the only thin i hate is the plastic strip at the front near the nummber plate but all u need to do is respary it the same colour lol
