2011 Hyundai Veloster Appears In New Spy Video During Testing In Europe

A new video of the 2011 Hyundai Veloster testing alongside the Volkswagen Scirocco has surfaced online today, courtesy of German magazine Auto Motor und Sport. The footage follows a series of spy photos that have trickled out of Europe over the past year.

The trickle of information about the Velostar is now becoming something of a torrent. While heavily camouflaged, its lines are now clearly evident. But other information is also making its way online.

Speaking at a media event in the US, outspoken Hyundai America boss John Krafcik claimed that the Veloster will achieve fuel consumption figures of 40mpg (5.8 l/100km) on the highway. Hyundai's new Theta II GDI 1.6 litre direct-injection petrol engine will power the car, producing around 148kW and 250Nm of torque.

With those sorts of numbers, the petrol-driven Veloster will outclass the 6.4 l/100km of Honda's CR-Z petrol-electric hybrid sports car.

While it is fair to say that Honda has never declared world-beating fuel consumption as its ultimate goal for the CR-Z, the Veloster's claims might at least merit some crowing from Hyundai's marketing department.

Boasting better fuel economy and, according to Krafcik, a significantly roomier interior and luggage space, the Veloster is likely to be an appealing prospect. And without the dollar-kick that comes with a hybrid powertrain, it will undoubtedly enter the market at a much lower price point than its Honda-badged counterpart.

Speaking with Autoblog, Krafcik confirmed that all variants of the Veloster will feature an oversized display panel in the centre stack (shown in our interior spy photo below) as a part of Hyundai's push to pull younger, more tech-oriented buyers to the brand.

Last year Mr Krafcik confirmed that the Korean carmaker will introduce the new coupe in 2011 as a successor to the Tiburon.

A 2+2 coupe, the Veloster will be based on the new Accent's underpinnings and, unlike the Korean automaker's Genesis Coupe, will be front-wheel-drive only. Both LHD and RHD production is planned, meaning an Australian release is likely.

Further specifics are not yet known, but with its debut now only months away, we should soon have more news of Hyundai's upcoming sporty coupe.

I do hope Hyundai will keep and apply most of the concept Veloster's good design points and that a bigger displacement engine ( maybe a petrol turbo and turbo-diesel versions ) will be included.

i like the look of the interior - well done! :)
but let's hope that it can steer well, unlike most Korean cars released to date...

I drove the Koup, it handles very very well IMO. Gotta remember how much these things are priced at. You get what you pay for, and the Koup is far from disappointing for its price.

Everyone has different reasons for saving money and there’s certainly no one-size-fits-all approach. You can save money in a wide variety of vehicles – from high street deposit accounts to investment bonds. That’s why personal advice on savings plans is so important.

    *

You might want to be saving for the future, for a deposit on the house of your dreams. Or for that disaster, which always hits when you least expect it – your boiler breaking down, or the engine blowing up on your car…
    *

You may want to make gifts to charity or to family members in the future. Or perhaps you just have spare money from an inheritance or matured policy, which you’d like to put to better use.

From the smallest goal to the biggest, the shortest term to the longest, our savings advice can give you plenty of ideas.

A very stiff and compelling competition against the Honda's CRZ.

I think this segment will be quite popular once these cars ( CRZ, Veloster ) arrives in Australia.
