THE DAYS OF AMG's 6.2 litre V8 - as featured across the AMG 63 line of vehicles - are numbered, if a new report this week is to be believed.

Speaking with US website Edmunds, Daimler R&D board member Dr Thomas Weber reportedly said that a new 5.5 litre twin-turbo V8 will succeed the larger engine late next year. The move is believed to be in response to tightening emission controls and the need for a more fuel efficient power plant.

Specific details, such as proposed power outputs, emissions or fuel economy targets were not revealed. An official announcement from Mercedes Benz is expected during the 2010 Paris Auto Show in September.

During the interview, Dr Webber suggested that along with the new engine, other V8-powered, non-AMG Benzes will pick up a smaller twin turbo V8 engine. Capacity for this engine is believed to be between 4.5 and 5.0 litres.
