Volkswagen GTI, GTD Get Golf R LED Tail-lights Overseas; Australia Not Confirmed

VOLKSWAGEN HAS ADDED the smoked LED tail-lights of the Golf R to both the Golf GTI and Golf GTD in international markets, and as an option for the 'regular' Golf hatch range.

Volkswagen Australia Public Relations Specialist Nadine Nethery was unable to confirm when the update would join the Australian line-up, the Golf GTI having launched locally in October.

The updated tail-lights feature 48 LEDs behind a smoked lens designed to dull the brilliance of the lights and protect the eyes of following motorists.

Volkswagen says the LEDs light up 0.2 seconds faster than ordinary incandescent lights, leading to a braking improvement for following cars of 5.6 metres from 100km/h.

Bi-Xenon headlights join the LED tail-lights as an optional extra on all Golf VI models except for the Golf R, which features the upgraded lights as standard.

The more powerful headlights feature a dynamic cornering system, adjusting the angle of the beam in conjunction with the steering direction.

The Bi-Xenon headlights also offer adaptive periphery lighting dependent on speed.

VW Australia Managing Director, Ms Anke Koeckler, confirmed to The Motor Report that the hot replacement for the Golf R32, the Golf R, is headed here in 2010, and the grunt-filled Golf GTD is also a “big probability”.

“We expect to have it (the Golf R) here in mid-2010,” Ms Koeckler said. “It fits very well into the Australian market.

“It will be easy to live with as a day-to-day proposition, and will be a very practical and enjoyable package.”

Pricing and a solid release date for the Golf GTD is unknown, but data obtained from the Australian Government’s  Road Vehicle Certification System (RVCS) in August shows that Volkswagen has applied for, and received, ADR certification for the Golf GTD three-door hatch.

Sure hope they are easier to see than the latest mdl golf's.
Who puts such a small indicator in the middle of a round brake light?? When they brake it is almost impossible to see the indicator...

Good point Dan, some designers just don't seem to think of these things; often I find that when some cars have the front indicators so close to the headlights, it's hard to see the blinker flashing if the car is coming toward you at night with the low beams on.

One thing I don't get with some designers and these LED tail lights at the rear, is when the manufacturer plugs the benefits of LED tech on a particular model, and then they revert back to standard incandescents for the next generation ??? Must be a cost issue, cos it makes no sense to do a retrograde step like that. I've noticed Honda have done this at least three times now with the updates to Yaris, Odyssey and Accord V6.

Sorry I meant Jazz not Yaris!

    Yeah Godspeed,
You do realise Honda's done massive cost-cutting on top of their price rises which has plumetted their sales (in NZ) to close to 0.

THe odyssey for example, chucking a head unit and everything from the 2-gen-old Odyssey.
Either Honda is still hungry for the same massive profits, or they're truly struggling to deliver cheap Jap cars which has really been a letdown.
other than that, I am still figuring abot uthe tail lights (Are they stuck on the boot door or does the boot open inwards of the lights?) Either way, the door would look kinda strange

And the GTD, front and back are pretty ugly. LED lights up front similar in design to the backs would be pretty epic and so would having GTI's exhausts... THere's a lot of work needing to be done to GTD which looks like VW intentionally put it a grade below the GTI :(

Looks like the inner tail lights are part of the bootlid, the outer ones are fixed with the body (http://www.contracthireandleasing.com/car-leasing-news/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/vw-golf-gti-mk-vi_4.jpg)

To me the Mk VI looks similar to a Mk V, but VW have obviously gone to a lot of trouble to add elements to make the Mk VI look a lot wider (tail light shape, fog lights at the extreme ends of a wider front air dam, etc). When I see a Mk V on the road now they look ultra tall and boxy.
