The sun is certainly shining brightly on anything that wears the Toyota badge at the moment. Bland styling is obviously in vogue and white must be the new black as sales of some of the most boring cars on the market continue to power along. No doubt their sales are driven by the fact that they are well made, reliable, efficient and handle with a modicum of decorum.

Toyota’s Aurion (pictured above) exceeded its monthly sales target of 2000 units in April of this year with 2,037 sales. Corolla is consistently the second best selling car in the nation (on a monthly basis) behind Holden’s Commodore and even outsold Commodore in January of 2007.

The result is that Toyota Australia have achieved record production figures for the first quarter of 2007. Toyota’s 3000-strong workforce produced over 33,000 cars between January and March of this year which is an increase of 22.4 per cent over the same period in the previous year.

Toyota have attributed the increased production to an increase in local demand which has risen by 50 per cent for the three month period. Toyota builds the Camry and Aurion at their Altona plant in Melbourne and exports both cars to more than 20 countries with the biggest market being the Middle-East. Export sales are expected to top 90,000 this year which is quite remarkable.

The new Camry (pictured above) and Aurion (V6 Camry) appear to have achieved rapid market acceptance with 11,400 of the locally manufactured Toyotas finding new homes in the first quarter of this year. Total production for the first quarter, including cars for export totaled 33,631 cars which makes Toyota Australia the worlds third largest producer of Camrys outside of Japan, with only the US and China producing more.
