HAVING REPLACED FORMER CEO Rick Wagoner just five months ago, General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson has resigned - certainly pushed - from the top spot at GM.

Henderson submitted his resignation at yesterday's monthly GM Board meeting. Chairman Ed Whitacre will replace Henderson in the interim as the company begins its search for a new CEO.

GM has issued a statement on Henderson's resignation, attributed to Chairman and interim CEO Ed Whitacre.

Fritz has done a remarkable job in leading the company through an unprecedented period of challenge and change.

While momentum has been building over the past several months, all involved agree that changes needed to be made. To this end, I have taken over the role of Chairman and CEO while an international search for a new president and CEO begins immediately.

With these new duties, I will begin working in the Renaissance Center headquarters on a daily basis. The leadership team – many who are with me today – are united and committed to the task at hand.

Whitacre went on to offer assurances that GM's daily business operations will continue unchanged under his leadership, saying that GM is on the right path.

No specific reason was given for Henderson's resignation beyond "the need for change".
