SYDNEY IS OFTEN ranked among the world's best cities, but this year it bears the honour of being one of the most expensive to park a car in.

Ranked fifth in the world in the 2009 Colliers International Global CBD Parking Rate Survey, Sydney is joined in the top 10 by Brisbane (7th) and Perth (9th).

According to the survey, which ranks cities by their average monthly unreserved parking rates, Sydney motorists pay $644 per month to park in Australia's biggest city.

Brisbane follows at $579, with New York City's $602 (Midtown, specifically) nestled between them.

Perth is a close third on the list of Australian cities, lifting about $566 from West Australian CBD workers and visitors each month.

Melbourne, well outside the top 10 at 25th, lists an average monthly cost of $372. The nation's second biggest city is followed by Adelaide with $241 and Canberra at $223.

Hobart and Darwin did not make the list.

The world's most expensive CBD to park in is London, costing motorists a whopping $1116 each month. London's West End follows closely with a $1045 monthly average.

The cheapest parking in the world can be found in India, where parking can be had for an average of around $1 per day, or $32 per month.

what a disgrace - shows how poor and pathetic town planning is in Australia - and comes as a surprise that Perth is at 9th place and not higher .. parking here is a joke with either nowhere to park, parking-lots that close at midnight and parking that's a rip-off in general!

    end rant..

If city planners put more effort into dedicated cycle paths (not shared with pedestrians), more people could leave the car at home and get to work a lot quicker and fitter. With the cost of inner city real estate, it's no wonder they need to charge high parking fees to make a buck.

Three Australian Cities in the top ten
I think that says more about private companies making a quick buck than the cost of real estate.

What a joke, Sydney and Brisbane's population are a fraction of the likes of London and New York and cost around the same to park in.

Also, pretty much any other global city with more than a few million people have mass rapid transit/subway systems. Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne only have substandard rail and buses.

I was in Sydney a couple of years ago and clearly remember having to pay $40 (yes, forty dollars) for 2 hours somewhere near darling harbour. I thought that was ridiculous at the time, and it seems for good reason.
I live in Perth and yes the parking here is also stupidly expensive. Obviously some rich people around since I for one can't afford parking like this.

Hey I know that off street parking, it's on Illawarra Rd Marrickville in Sydney's inner west.

Yes parking is very expensive especially in the CBD. I wouldn't mind if we had a world class public transport system but we don't. So driving into the CBD is sometimes the only practical option.

Yeah, i agree its a joke. couple the cost of parking with Tolls fuel ect it takes a great chunk out of the weekly income. The parking in India sounds cheap but i think the average income there is arounf $7 a day so its probebly comparible to Australias parking costs. there are sites like http://www.parkingaustralia.com.au/ that you can find parking at a much cheaper rate than the commercial car parks.
