The ‘unknown’ details surrounding Ferrari’s stunning new California are now known and we can also confirm that it is bound for Australia as early as 2009, where it will join the 612 Scaglietti and 430 Scuderia as one of Ferrari’s new generation models.

The California will be available exclusively as a convertible with a folding hard top. Both chassis and bodywork are aluminium, in line with the rest of the current range. The California will be powered by an all-new V8 engine mounted for the first time in the marque’s history in the mid-front position.

In line with Ferrari tradition, the new model also features several innovations. Apart from its folding hard top, these include the original 2+ concept which guarantees some degree of versatility of use in the rear of the car. The California’s 4.3-litre V8 engine features direct injection and a “flat” crankshaft. It generates 343Kw/460hp at 7,500 rpm with a torque curve that Ferrari say enhances vehicle dynamics and provides maximum driving pleasure.

The new V8 is powerful enough to endow the Ferrari California with supercar performance. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is said to take less than 4.0 seconds. Helping achieve this level of performance is the 7-speed dual clutch transmission that also reduces fuel consumption and emissions (310g/km CO2).

A new multilink rear suspension system is a feature and the Ferrari California is also equipped with Ferrari’s F1-Trac traction control system which made its debut on the 599 GTB Fiorano. Ferrari have further honed the F1-Trac system for use in the California, to suit the typical driving conditions expected for their new GT. Brembo brakes featuring carbon-ceramic material disks are standard fitment.

The cabin has been trimmed using quality materials as is typical of Ferrari’s. New accessories and equipment, such as the seats, steering wheel, instrument panel and infotainment system, combine to ensure ease of use and excellent ergonomics.

Ferrari say that the California is aimed at owners who desire a car which embodies everything the Prancing Horse represents in terms of sporty design and innovation, but who also seek a car with greater versatility than ever before. The car will be officially unveiled to the public at the Paris International Car Show.
