This years Australian International Motor Show, held in Sydney from October 9-19 is shaping up to be a big one, with the organizers announcing a new attraction they are calling Supercar Central.
Supercar central is an all new concept for Australian motor shows and its purpose is to bring together some of the best low-volume hand-crafted exotics the automotive world has to offer.
“Supercar Central will be a highlight of a very strong Australian motor show in 2008. The display will provide a unique opportunity to enjoy rarely sighted cars in one place at one time,” said the chief executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, Andrew McKellar.
Initial exhibits already confirmed for Supercar Central are the $1.5 million Pagani Zonda Roadster from Italy, the hand-built Morgan Aero 8 from Britain and the Australian-designed Elfin MS8 Streamliner.
According to the FCAI, the 2008 Australian International Motor Show is being strongly supported by Australia’s most popular car brands, many of whom have increased their commitment to the show by booking more floor space.
Mr McKellar said the motor vehicle brands attending this year’s show represent more than 90 per cent of Australian car market sales.
“Increased space allocation for some exhibitors will give them the best ever opportunity to display new models and concepts in an even more attractive fashion. The result will be a better looking and even more dynamic motor show,” said Mr McKellar.
Last year’s motor show in Sydney attracted 245,000 people, making it Australia’s largest automotive expo and one of the top 10 motor shows in the world.
The 2008 Australian International Motor Show will be held at the Sydney Exhibition Centre at Darling Harbour from October 9 to 19.

Shame the story didn’t explain why the super car corner was necessary…..it’s because a whole bunch of very important car manufacturers won’t be at the Sydney motor show this year!!!!!
We are all ears Carl?
Steane……My sources tell me that Mercedes and another 10 or 12 manufacturers will not exhibit this year at Sydney preferring to spend the more than one million dollars needed to buy floor space at the show on other events and might make only bye annual appearances from now on….i hope this information is incorrect but i fear it’s probably true!!!
That is the reason the Sydney motor show organizers are promoting this super car exhibit to try and do some preemptive damage control.
If I’m wrong i apologise.
That would be a shame Carl. A few of the big names pulled out of this years Melbourne Motor Show, incl MB.
I suspect the supercars listed are all from the one source in Sydney but they have plenty of time to add to the collection. Mind you, the more relevant cars can be just as interesting for different reasons.
Even with a bunch of manufacturers missing the SMS would still be a great event - I was there last year and had a ball. We are going to try and get the whole TMR crew to come along this year, so it had better be good!
Thanks for getting back in touch with the news.
This has been happening for a while. Niche non-local car manufacturers can’t see the value in doing both Sydney and Melbourne’s Motor Shows in the same year.
Companies like Jaguar and Porsche tend to alternate events every year, if I remember correctly.
Let’s hope this doesn’t herald the decent of the Sydney (Australian) Motorshow into mediocrity, as per the British Motor Show… Australia has always punched above their weight in car sales and manufacturing, to an extent, much like NZ. But at the end of the day, our market can only justify so much marketing expenditure.
Still, i tend to go to motor shows to see cars i could not otherwise see/test drive at a dearlership.
