MERCEDES-BENZ is expected to launch an update for the R-Class MPV later this year, with the most visible changes to bumper, wheel and lamp-cluster designs.

Our preview rendering, above, offers a speculative look at the expected styling of the R-Class when the camouflage comes off its near-production test cars, spied in Europe late last year.

This latest update marks the third facelift to the R-Class, which uses the same platform the model was launched with in 2005.

The current generation R-Class was last updated in 2007, an entry-level rear-wheel-drive model and a seven-seater joining the line-up at the same time.

Despite the camouflage, our spy photos reveal that the 2011 R-Class has been treated to a comprehensive overhaul. The more contemporary exterior styling will likely be matched by similar make-over inside.
