SPANIARD FERNANDO ALONSO has praised his team for its efforts as he bid farewell to Renault with a disappointing 16th place finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Alonso, who will drive for Ferrari next season, has spent seven years at the French outfit after former team boss Flavio Briatore brought him to Renault following a stunning debut season with Minardi.

Following the race at Yas Marina Circuit, the double World Champion thanked Renault for its role in helping to guide him to F1’s peak, but admitted he had hoped to bow out in stronger fashion after a winless season – only the third of his glittering career.

“The result today is disappointing as we were not able to produce the performance we wanted,” he said.“I would have liked to finish the season on a high, especially as this was my last race with Renault.

“I would like to thank the entire team for everything that we have achieved together over the years. We had some great victories and won championships together.

“It has been the most amazing seven years of my career and something I will never forget.”

Meanwhile, outgoing Williams driver Nico Rosberg said he is disappointed to have failed to score a point in his final outing for the British outfit after finishing ninth at Yas Marina Circuit

Rosberg is poised to switch to Brawn GP next season after spending four years at Williams which yielded a race best finish of second at the now notorious 2008 Singapore Grand Prix.

“I would have liked to help the team hold on to sixth place in the Constructors' Championship,” he said.

“From a personal perspective, my seventh place in the driver's table wasn't challenged and I think this was a good result this year in the circumstances.

“It's been a long season and I would really like to thank all the team for their effort during the last four years. We have had a great time together.”
