GREAT WALL MOTORS has today announced that its X240 SUV is now available in Australia, starting from $23,990 driveaway.

The GWM X240, a 'badge engineered' right-hand-drive version of the Chinese-market Hover crossover, joins the carmaker’s V240 and SA220 medium-duty commercial utes.

A five-speed manual gearbox is fitted as standard, mated to a 2.4 litre petrol four developing 100kW at 5250rpm and 200Nm of torque between 2500 to 3000rpm.

Fuel consumption is rated at 10.4 l/100km on the combined cycle.

Disc brakes feature at all four corners, behind 17×7.0-inch wheels shod with 235/65 R17 tyres.

For safety, the X240 offers dual front airbags, ABS brakes, electronic brake-force distribution and rear parking sensors.

Electronic stability control is not offered, but will likely be added in time for the Australian Federal Government's mandated ESC requirements in 2011.

Air conditioning, electric driver’s seat, leather-trimmed seats, power steering, central locking and an eight-speaker CD/MP3 sound system figure among the X240's standard features.

A sunroof makes up the only optional extra, available for $1000.

Spearheading GWM's passenger car offerings in Australia, the X240 is set to be joined by a version of the Chinese-market Florid five-door small car by the end of this year.

Crikey! so with a 2.4l whats the power to weight ratio like? not to mention fuel efficiency goes out the window when you will need to flog the little engine's guts out

Probably a relatively tough vehicle given its Toyota/Isuzu underpinnings. So cheap too. Hope it does alright.

These negatives comment must be from dealers selling other products knowing that Great Wall technology is better than theirs yet its priced far better. Try it before you bag it.

So cheap, and with only 100kW..... It looks like a 1600-1800kg machine... Forget climbing mountains, all downhill driving only.. lol

At $24k, I'd rather buy an equivalent from Hyundai for a few bucks more, DSC, better NCAP and Australia wide support..

    Wardski,
Did you know that this suv scored a 4-star Euro-ncap? Not bad for a Chinese made suv. Comes with leather seats and 8 SPEAKERS as standard, & way better looking than the pig-like Tucson. For under 25k, definitely better than the Tucson, kid...

can you point me to the Euro-ncap results that show this? I can't seem to find it on their website.

I am currently about to buy one of the two SUVs Greatwall X240 or Hyundai Tucson
My wife seems to like the basic looking Hyundai and has seen enough reviews from that established manufacturer to be happy with us buying one I on the other hand have looked closely at the Very reasonably priced X240 and I prefer the X240 as a package due to the 3yr/100000 km warranty also the 24hr roadside assitance added I will be taking a look asap at one close up very soon as I like the look of the vehicle and package being offered.
Those who will criticise may only do so out of habit or they could be right but unless people go and have a close look they will never know!
I only have concern regarding panel quality as a chinese manufacturer released a vehicle in the UK and the panels were wafer thin!
I will take a good look at that aspect as with many others
But I feel its worth a look in my opinion and to undercut their main rivals is the only way to really make in roads into the market in this sector

I had a look at the Great Wall SUV, wasn't expecting much, but was greatly surprised. I took it for a test drive around the burbs and found the little 2.4 L adequate for driving around town. Has anybody driven this vehicle off-road or with a full trailer?
    Interested to hear anybodies experiences.

We purchased and received our x240 2 weeks and must say we are very impressed. Came with a full tank of petrol, 12 months rego and also a little gift pack with discounts on different things and 3 years road side assist & 2 sets of keys. The dealership we went to was great as well. We have just clocked over the 1,000km mark and have had no issues with the car i have learnt to drive a manual in the x240 and i found this very easy to drive. Only problem with the design of the car is that the handbrake is hard to get to because of the centre console but thats my only problem with such a cheap well built car. would highly recommend this car to anyone

My x240 has just done 10,000 klms and very impressed . Could do with a bit more power, but is quite adequate for my needs.. I have towed a 900kg camper behind it on three ocassions on camping trips no problems, cruises at 110kph effortlessly and very quiet. Fuel economy is about the same as other 2.4 litre cars, or close enough. My Mitsi Outlander had a 2.4 litre motor as well, unladen it's economy was better than my x240 generally, but placing my camper on the back really knocked back the economy. The x240 has better economy towing my camper and a good sized fuel tank to get me further before refilling. Off road the x240 is OK, I have not done anything too dramatic, but some heart in mouth hills were a suitable test. Good ground clearance on the x240, nothing to snag beneath, well designed, door dust seals work better than my Outlander, the rear window dust deflector airfoil actually works, that's a big plus. IGreat turning circle for those tight tracks through the scrub.. Fuel tank is very solidly covered, and although the usual plastic, the front underbody stone guards are well formed and cover well. Motor and running gear is easy to access, an easy to work on vehicle, big plus ! Well appointed interior, easy clean leather seats, nice sound system, ample interior and exterior lights, adjustable headlights are a good bonus. Most interior plastics comparable to any other Oz or Jap made car. All in all I find nothing of any big significance to complain about, these vehicles are excellent bang for buck, and look great too, turns a lot of heads and attracts interest. Other car manufactures and secondhand dealers may have some problems in sales to deal with judging by the value for money the x240 seems to offer, I'm very pleased with mine.....world beware !... the great Chinese sleeping giant has awoken

I have had my x240 for a few months now so far so good . Have just put 12000 ks on it.
I know there is a lot of car snobs out there but i have never been one .
i thought i would have a look at the x240 on a trip into town one weekend took it for a test drive when i got back i made the salesman a offer on a trade in on my old care $1600 change over and i had myself a new x240.
My thoughts were all the running gear and motor are all proven equipment so the only thing that is new is the shell,
and in my opinion its well set out and looks good .
My work vehicle Is a Nissan Navara ( top of the range) and as I work in the agriculture business I do a lot of off road driving . I find the x240 more sure footed of road and a lot more comfertable to drive than the Nissan .
The only thing I can fault at this stage is the lack of real grunt like the turbo diesels have .
Their are some people saying they are not safe . the x240 got a 4 out of 5 wich is on par with with most mainstream 4wd out there unless you get into the top of the range and they are over twice the price of an x240.
So when you compair apples with apples they are a good unit.
Also when it comes to 4wd -ing I dont see many serious Toyota and Nissan off-roaders that dont have lift kits after market wheels beefed up suspension, snorkles, diff lockers. MMM wonder if this would make the x240 a good 4x4

    Hi,
I traded in my Landcruiser Sahara (top of range) - plus a few grand, not much - and bought TWO X240's. Had them fully fitted with everything (Sunroof, running boards, tow kit, nudge bar, tinted windows, electronic rust proofing, paint protection, plus extended 3 year 180,000km warranty - the lot!).
My wife and I have so far put about 5,000km on each of the vehincles. No major complaints at all. Minor complaints, include 'squeaks' which are hard to locate. Very Minor issues with trim finish (you have to be really picky to see them). Service cost about $200 ave.
So in reality - two great cars for the price of one!
I test drove Ssangyong, Holden and Honda 'equivilents' - and absolutely do nto regret my choice.
Havng said all this - the vehicle is young - so who knows what might happen over 2, 3 or 5 years (hence the extende warranty).
Happy driving guys - may the BEST VALUE FOR MONEY deal always win out over rip-off prices and those with significantly higher service prices...
