Fifth Gear Automotive TV Show Cancelled: Report

REPORTS CIRCULATING this morning suggest that popular UK automotive variety show Fifth Gear has been cancelled, however no official announcement has been made.

Launched after the short-lived cancellation of Top Gear in 2001,  Fifth Gear grew to become a popular alternative to the reborn Top Gear series - although perennially in ’second place’ to the rampant Clarkson.

Despite drawing a up to one million viewers during its final season, Fifth Gear, an expensive production without the benefit of the BBC’s budget, was unable to break into the Five Network’s top 30 shows.

While the buzz online has Fifth Gear drawing to a close (there is no official confirmation), presenter Johnny Smith said via his Twitter page this morning that the show isn’t over.

“Thanks to everyone for your compliments and words of encouragement. Remember, FG isn’t OFFICIALLY finished. Don’t (ever?) believe The Mail,” Smith wrote.

I think Tiff Needell deserves better and he’s definitely the stand-out amongst this lot. Vicky Butler is alright too but I don’t really rate the others as acts.

Tiff is at least very skilled (better than the three TG blokes) and has a natural presenting style. He also loves Bimmers and a good long powerslide :)

Fifth Gear needs to go a little more hardcore. Similar to Best Motoring. The whole playing the entire field style (slightly comical but factual) isn’t working.

If I want slabs of information on cars I will watch Best Motoring. If I want to kick back and have a laugh, while being dazzled by sweet cars sliding around a track, then I would watch Top Gear.

There is no such thing as a “Best of both worlds”… So it seems.

VBH drove the WRX slower than the Golf GTi on the race track and the GTi was the winner of the two. Makes you wonder :)

The show is just poorly done, its not funny and not informative, they try and pass off top gear like banter only the people clearly have no chemistry between the three of them. The testing also comes off as half assed, often on very poor circuits in the wet.

Its not really factual enough to appeal to the hardcore croud and not entertaining enough for the masses.
